What is Chery?
Chery is one of China’s biggest car manufacturers, dating back to 1997.
Back home in China, they’ve been selling millions of cars for years, and now it’s time to take on international markets like the UK.
Although you might not have seen any Chery cars, per se, you will have seen some of Chery’s other brands on the roads. Cars like OMODA and JAECOO belong to Chery.
What does Chery stand for?
Chery doesn’t stand for anything, and it doesn’t have any big and deep meanings like some other brands. Instead, it’s just a fun-sounding, light-hearted name.
Who are Chery cars for?
Chery cars focus heavily on affordability, so you’ll get excellent value for money in a car that should be cheap to run. Especially if you pick an electric Chery.
Who makes Chery cars?
Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. designs and builds all of its own vehicles, but it’s had a good taste of what UK drivers are after.
For example, a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover to manufacture cars in China more cheaply saw Chery learn a thing or two about the UK market.
Who owns Chery?
Chery is a government-owned brand, but it operates just as any other business would.
Where are Chery cars from?
Chery calls Wuhu its headquarters – it’s in the Anhui province of China. This is also where its other companies are based, like OMODA and JAECOO.
Where are Chery cars made?
Most Chery cars are built in the firm’s Chinese factories, but some local plants have been set up to serve local markets more efficiently in places like Brazil, Iran and Egypt.
How big is the Chery factory?
Chery’s Wuhu factory is capable of producing hundreds of thousands of cars each year, with a total global capacity of over a million annually.
If enough market share is gained, Chery says it won’t rule out a UK factory.

How much is a Chery car?
Chery’s pitch has always been value for money – the Tiggo 7 is cheaper than the MG HS, which is already thousands cheaper than the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage.
What is the cheapest Chery car?
Chery’s cheapest car is the Tiggo 7, which is a five-seat SUV with a turbocharged petrol engine.
Chery range and charging
Both the Chery Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 use an 18.4kWh battery, which means up to 56 miles of electric-only range is on offer.
With 40kW DC charging, you can get a 30 to 80% charge in 20 minutes.
What is the range of a Chery car?
Chery’s 18.4kWh battery promises up to 56 miles of electric-only range. Combined with the 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 can go up to 745 miles before they need refuelling.
Chery reliability and ownership
Chery cars are very new to the UK market, but they’ve already proven to be go-to options for budget-conscious drivers in other markets.
It’s helped by the fact that Euro NCAP awarded the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 four stars in 2025.
While they may be one mark short of a full five-star rating, Chery’s commitment to getting them tested early on during launch shows us that Chery means business, and that it’s committed to reassuring customers.
Are Chery cars good?
Chery cars are built to strong standards, and we’ve already seen this by the amount of OMODA and JAECOO cars it’s sold since launching those brands.
The fact that drivers are speaking highly of their cars and are influencing others to buy into the brand means Chery must be doing something right.
How reliable are Chery cars?
Reliability data is still limited in the UK since Chery is new here, but in other markets where they’re already available, they’re seen as being durable and inexpensive to run.
Chery’s offering a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty on its cars, which is up there with the likes of Kia and around double the industry average.
Chery vs. Tesla: which is better?
At the moment, Chery doesn’t manufacture electric cars, so it’s unfair to compare it to Tesla.
Still, the 18.4kWh battery in the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid models offers up to 56 miles of electric range before the petrol engine kicks in.
Chery UK availability
Chery launched in the UK in the summer of 2025 with two mid-sized family SUVs – the five-seat Tiggo 7 and the seven-seat Tiggo 8.
Prices start from under £25,000 and go up to about £37,000 for a fully-specced SUV.
