What is KGM?

KGM is a car brand from South Korea with origins dating back to the 1950s, and was previously known as SsangYong.

Is SsangYong KGM?

In short, yes. SsangYong rebranded to KGM in 2023 as a way to future-proof its brand image and to relaunch its model lineup here in the UK with a fresh start.

What does KGM stand for?

KGM stands for ‘KG Mobility’ and changed because the brand was acquired by the KG Group in 2022. This name, therefore, denotes that it’s the automotive branch of KG.

What does KGM mean?

The KG Group, which owns KGM, is a major corporation with an interest in a massive range of industries, such as chemicals, steel, agriculture, poultry, legal, e-commerce and now cars.

Who are KGM cars for?

KGM makes a wide range of different car types (which we’ll explain more below) and is therefore suited to a wide range of buyers.

Offering different engine types and body styles, there’s plenty of choice.

Who makes KGM cars?

All KGM cars are made in-house by KG Mobility.

Who owns KGM?

KGM is owned by KG Mobility, formerly known as SsangYong.

Where are KGM cars from?

KGM is a South Korean brand originally founded in the 1950s. Its name has changed several times since then, but it's always been a South Korean company.

Where are KGM cars made?

KGM cars are primarily made at its main production plant in the city of Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

How big is the KGM factory?

When compared to massive car factories like BYD’s 32,000-acre one, the KGM facility is small, but it’s still big enough to produce more than 200,000 vehicles every year.

KGM Tivoli

Silver KGM Tivoli

The KGM Tivoli is the smallest car in its current lineup, offering great practicality (423-litre boot), a quirky design and plenty of kit as standard.

KGM Korando

White KGM Korando

Building on the Tivoli, the KGM Korando brings more space with its 551-litre boot and a tweaked design to take on the Nissan Qashqai.

KGM Torres

If you want a car with that rugged off-road aesthetic but with an attractive price, the KGM Torres is probably the car for you. It’s well-equipped and comes in a variety of specs.

KGM Torres EVX

Want that same durable look but with a completely silent drive? Opt for the fully electric KGM Torres EVX, with 287 miles of range and Jeep-like prowess for less.

KGM Actyon

KGM Actyon exterior

The KGM Actyon (pronounced ‘action’) was the first proper new car the brand launched when it began its new post-SsangYong era. This showed a new design and proper credentials to take on Škoda and Volkswagen.

KGM Rexton

Grey KGM Rexton

Proper affordable seven-seater SUVs can be hard to come by, but the KGM Rexton is right there. It aims to bring attainable luxury to a family trip away, with a diesel engine for long-distance driving and a spacious cabin for everyone.

KGM Rexton Commercial

White KGM Rexton Commercial

Sometimes you need van-like storage but with car looks. The KGM Rexton Commercial is the same as the seven-seat version but with five seats removed and a massive 2,200 litres of boot space and a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

KGM Musso

Blue KGM Musso EV

The KGM Musso is essentially the Rexton but in pickup truck form. It’s super practical, hard-wearing and has a punchy diesel engine to help you in all situations. There's also a fully electric model now, called the Musso EV. This rivals the Isuzu D-Max EV.

What is the smallest KGM car?

The smallest KGM car is the Tivoli – marketed as the ‘mini-SUV’ in its range. But it still gets five seats, a big enough boot and SUV looks.

What is the fastest KGM car?

KGM isn’t really known for making fast cars, and in fact consciously makes very much the opposite.

But in terms of stats and figures, the electric Torres EVX is the fastest, with a top speed of 109mph and a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds.

KGM prices and value

How much is a KGM car?

A new KGM car costs in the region of £24,000 to £45,000, but prices will vary over the years. But buy a used one and you can shave thousands off the purchase price just because it has a few miles on the clock.

What is the cheapest KGM car?

The cheapest KGM car as of September 2025 is the KGM Tivoli, starting at around £24,000.

Silver KGM Rexton

What is the range of a KGM car?

Most KGM cars are petrol or diesel, so they can travel up to 550 miles (or 45mpg). But if you opt for an electric model like the Torres EVX, you can expect around 280 miles on a full charge.

KGM reliability and ownership

A deep dive into KGM cars safety ratings, reliability and warranties.

Are KGM cars good?

In terms of practicality and value, KGM cars are a very good option to consider. KGM vehicles like the Torres EVX and Korando offer roomy cabins, decent electric ranges, generous warranties and competitive pricing.

How reliable are KGM cars?

KGM has been making cars for more than 70 years, so they’re certainly not new to this game.

Its most recent models show all the right signs of a dependable car, but it’s too early to comment on long-term reliability.

Every new KGM car comes with a five-year/100,000-mile warranty, except for its electric cars, which get a seven-year/90,000-mile warranty.

KGM vs. Tesla: which is better?

A silver Tesla Model 3 Performance drives on a desert road, with mountains and a clear blue sky in the background.

It’s not entirely fair to directly compare KGM and Tesla, because they make cars aimed at very different audiences, but if you do, there are a number of categories to consider. These are:

Price:

  • KGM: £23,995-£42,495

  • Tesla: £39,990-£72,480

Number of models in the UK:

  • KGM: Eight

  • Tesla: Two (four if you're buying used)

Electric range:

  • KGM: 287 miles

  • Tesla: 311-436 miles

Charging speeds:

  • KGM: 145kW (10 to 80% in 37min)

  • Tesla: 250kW (0 to 80% in less than 30min)

Availability in the UK:

  • KGM: All models are readily available, new and used

  • Tesla: All models are readily available, new and used

Safety:

  • KGM: No KGM cars tested, but most SsangYongs scored four or above at Euro NCAP

  • Tesla: All cars scored 5/5 stars at Euro NCAP

KGM UK availability

KGM cars are widely available in the UK – new and used. We’d always recommend looking at a used example first because you can save a small fortune buying a nearly new car with just a few miles on the clock.

KGM sells all eight models in the UK, so there’s plenty of choice.
