Originally a British brand, MG has been making cars over 100 years, and when it was bought by a Chinese firm a few years ago, its strategy changed, and it started making electric cars.
Soon after, it launched MG IM – the luxury electric car branch of this long-standing car company.
But what is it and why do you need to know about it?

What is MG IM?
MG has a long history of making cars, and it all began back in 1924, but MG IM is a recent addition to its portfolio.
Broken down, MG IM stands for ‘Morris Garages, Intelligent Mobility’.
The first half is what MG has always stood for, originating in Oxford. The second half signifies MG IM’s dedication to making intelligent and forward-thinking electric cars.
Who are MG IM cars for?
If MG cars are for people who want an affordable car, an MG IM is aimed more at someone who wants a BMW or Mercedes experience with a Tesla twist.
Who makes MG IM cars?
MG IM cars are made by MG, but a different arm of the business, focusing on high-end, luxury electric cars.
Who owns MG IM?
MG IM is owned by SAIC Motors (which bought MG in 2007), but it’s a majority shareholder, with the other owners being the Alibaba Group and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.
But to keep things simple, it’s best to think of MG IM as being owned by SAIC’s automotive arm.
Where are MG IM cars made?
All MG IM cars are made at SAIC’s production facility in Lingang, Shanghai, where all other MGs are made. They’re both designed and built in China, keeping MG IM very much in-house.
MG may have originally been a British car brand, but the new MG IM range of cars is completely different to what we saw coming out of the Morris garage in the early 1920s.
How big is the MG IM factory?
The MG IM factory in Shanghai, known as the Zhiji/IM Motors facility, is reportedly 1.2 million square metres, which is over half the size of Monaco.
Full MG IM lineup
MG IM5
The MG IM5 is an out-and-out Tesla Model 3 rival and has had its sights set on the American EV ever since it arrived in the UK.
It gets a 357-mile range, a massive 396kW charging speed, 732hp and a ludicrous 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds in the top-spec Performance model.
MG IM6
In Tesla terms, the MG IM6 rivals the Model Y as the small premium electric SUV in the range. It has a 388-mile range, the same 396kW charging speed as the IM5, up to 740hp and can complete the 0-62mph sprint in 3.5 seconds.
MG IM prices and value
Being the luxury sub-brand of MG, the IM range has to be priced correctly to ensure it can compete with rivals.
How much is an MG IM car?
Prices for the IM5 start at around £40,000, going up to £48,000 for the IM6 SUV. This prices them really well against their main rivals.
But buy a used one and you can save a hefty chunk of cash on a nearly new model with a few miles on the clock.
What is the cheapest MG IM car?
The cheapest MG IM car is the IM5, starting at just shy of £40,000 to compete with the Tesla Model 3’s starting price.
MG IM range and charging
An important factor to consider when buying any electric car is the range and charging speed. Thankfully for MG IM buyers, you’re in safe hands.
What is the range of an MG IM car?
Overall range is really impressive across all MG IM models. The base model IM5 75 Standard Range gets 304 miles, but his can extend to a claimed 441 miles with the top-spec IM5 100 Long Range.
It’s very similar story for the IM6, too. The base IM6 100 Long Range gets 388 miles of range, which is all you need. Range drops slightly for the 700hp+ models, but that’s to be expected.
MG IM reliability and ownership
New cars have to be as safe and reliable as possible to create the best ownership experience. MG IM knows this and acts suitably.
Are MG IM cars good?
Abhishek Sampat, head of electric vehicles at cinch, says: “MG IM is a premium brand with a familiar name.
“MG has had a massive turnaround in brand perception in the last few years and is one of the biggest new EV sellers in the UK with their overall volumes in 2025 (including PHEV and petrol) exceeding 50,000 vehicles so far this year.”
How reliable are MG IM cars?
On the whole, electric cars are much more dependable than traditional petrol and diesel cars because the electric motors have fewer moving parts than an internal combustion engine.
MG IM cars are too new to know the true reliability of, but if recent electric MGs are anything to go by, you shouldn’t expect any issues.
