Who makes OMODA cars and where are OMODA cars from?

With new car prices climbing higher and higher, many of the household names we’ve grown up with have become more expensive than we’d have liked.

Step in OMODA – a Chinese brand whose aim it is to make motoring accessible to the masses.

OMODA came about in 2022 when Chinese parent company, Chery went global. It exists alongside sister company JAECOO, which edges more towards the luxury side of the affordable market.

What we’ll cover in this guide to OMODA

What is OMODA?

China already has tens of brands that offer cars at far more reasonable prices than we’re used to in the UK, and OMODA was a strategic move to bring budget-friendly cars to other markets.

Consider it a challenger brand to other affordable options, like MG, Dacia, Renault, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan and many more.

Brand type: SUV manufacturer

Parent company: Chery Automobile Co. Ltd

Country of origin: China

Model range: OMODA 3, OMODA 5, OMODA E5, OMODA 7, OMODA 9

Powertrains: Petrol, hybrid and electric

What does OMODA mean?

According to OMODA, the name can be split into two elements. ‘O’ and ‘moda’ – meaning ‘Oxygen’ and ‘modern fashion’.

Who are OMODA cars for?

OMODA cars are primarily targeted towards buyers who seek maximum value for money – the type of buyers who won’t pay thousands more just for a premium badge on the grille.

But its cars are hardly short on style or equipment, so they’re still cars you can buy with your heart (not just your head).

Who makes OMODA cars?

OMODA cars are manufactured under Chery Automobile, and exported by Chery International.

It’s one of Chery’s international brands, including JAECOO.

Who owns OMODA?

Chery is a state-owned Chinese car manufacturer that was founded in 1997. It’s headquartered in Wuhu, Anhui, China, where it operates under government guidance.

OMODA and JAECOO – what’s the link?

OMODA and JAECOO are their own distinct brands, both offering a combination of combustion and electrified models.

They both belong to Chery, much like Audi, SEAT and Škoda all belong to the Volkswagen Group.

Where are OMODA cars made?

OMODA’s main production plant is in Wuhu, but it also has a joint venture with Spanish company EV Motors to build cars at an ex-Nissan factory in Barcelona.

Full OMODA model lineup

OMODA’s current and upcoming lineup consists of the:

  • OMODA 3

  • OMODA 5

  • OMODA E5

  • OMODA 7

  • OMODA 9

OMODA 3

We’re expecting the OMODA 3 to launch by the end of 2026 as a compact crossover no bigger in footprint than hatchbacks like the VW Golf.

Early images and renders show it having a much more angular look than earlier OMODA cars.

It should come with a choice of electric, plug-in hybrid and combustion powertrains to suit every type of driver.

OMODA 5

Silver OMODA 5 with black wheels, and modern headlights, parked in a studio setting.

This was OMODA’s first take on the UK market – a crossover SUV to take on established leaders like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage.

Power comes from a 147hp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Prices for the OMODA 5 start at around £6,000 less than a new Nissan Qashqai and £2,000 less than an MG HS, at the time of writing.

OMODA E5

Front view of an OMODA E5 parked in front of a modern glass building, with greenery reflected in the windows.

Virtually identical to the Omoda 5, the E5 is the electric equivalent. You can tell them apart because the petrol model has a bold, flashy grille and the electric version has a blanked-off front end.

There’s 204hp on offer, so it feels reasonably spritely, and you’ll get 267 miles of claimed range from the 61kWh battery, which puts it almost exactly in the same position as the BYD ATTO 3.

This car arrived at the same time as the regular ‘5’ as the brand’s first models for the UK market.

OMODA 7

OMODA 7 with a silver finish speeds through a blurred, colorful background, showcasing its modern design and dynamic motion.

You might be able to guess by its name, but the OMODA 7 is a slightly bigger crossover designed for growing families.

It was first seen at the Shanghai Motor Show in April 2025 alongside its cousin, the JAECOO 5.

We’re expecting petrol and plug-in hybrid variants to come first, but an electric model might come later on down the line.

OMODA 9

OMODA 9 with modern design, featuring a diamond-pattern grille and stylish wheels, set against a dark gradient background.

OMODA’s biggest car, the 9, is a bit like the company showing off what it’s capable of. Especially if your budget is a bit higher.

The 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid system produces 449hp (no, that’s not a typo) for a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds. That’s faster than a VW Golf GTI.

It’s more expensive than the BYD SEAL U DM-i and about on-par with a high-spec VW Tiguan eHybrid, but it only comes as an all-singing, all-dancing top-spec SUV.

What is the smallest OMODA car?

OMODA’s smallest car is the 5/E5, but the upcoming OMODA 3 will change that.

What is the fastest OMODA car?

With 449hp and 700Nm of torque, the OMODA 9 SHS (Super Hybrid System) is the fastest model, with a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds.

Drive it economically and you can get over 700 miles of combined petrol and electric range.

OMODA prices and value

OMODA’s primary mission is to sell cars at an affordable price, but without making you feel like you’ve bought a bargain basement car.

How much is an OMODA car?

At the time of writing, OMODA cars cost £23,990 for the 5, £33,065 for the E5 and £44,990 for the 9.

Used models have already started to fall to the £20,000 mark, and below, on cinch.

What is the cheapest OMODA car?

OMODA’s cheapest car is the 5, but the 3 could end up being cheaper still.

What is the range of an OMODA E5?

OMODA 5 – 51-litre fuel tank, 31.1mpg

OMODA E5 – 61kWh battery, 267 miles

OMODA 9 – 34kWh battery, 93 miles plus 70-litre tank, 700+ miles total

OMODA claims the E5 will do 267 miles, with power coming from a 61kWh battery pack.

Efficiency stands at 3.9mi/kWh (in test conditions), which is respectable.

Charging times and costs

The OMODA E5 takes up to 130kW during peak rapid charging. Many Peugeots and Vauxhalls are limited to 100kW, but other cars in this class offer 150kW or more.

A 30-80% fast charge will take 28 minutes.

Charge the battery at home using a 7kW connection in just under nine hours.

OMODA reliability and ownership

Being a new brand, you’re right to wonder if OMODAcars are reliable.

Remember that OMODA is new to the UK, but Chery has had a couple of decades to perfect the formula over in China.

Are OMODA cars good?

Abhishek Sampat, Head of Electric Vehicles at cinch, said: "OMODA might be a fresh badge on UK roads, but first impressions are strong.

“The build quality feels far more polished than you’d expect at the price point, the electric E5 has a genuinely usable range, and the 9 shows that this Chery-backed brand can play in the big-SUV league. As a value-for-money package, OMODA is already punching above its weight.”

How reliable are OMODA cars?

OMODA is one of the UK’s newest brands, so long-term reliability is hard to confirm.

Still, OMODA cars come with a seven-year warranty and an eight-year warranty on the high-voltage battery (both capped at 100,000 miles), which is far beyond the industry average.

OMODA vs. JAECOO: What’s the difference?

OMODA aims to be a mainstream, high-quality brand, but JAECOO wants to offer even more premium touches.

Both cars share a lot of mechanical parts, but they have their own totally different looks.
