What is an MOT certificate?

An MOT certificate is your prize for getting your car tested and registered as roadworthy.

You’ll receive this document when your car passes its MOT test, showing it’s safe and legal to drive on UK roads (with tax and insurance, of course).

The certificate will confirm your vehicle meets all the right standards, and will show any conditions of the pass or ‘advisory’ faults that might need fixing soon.

You’ll use this certificate when it comes to taxing your car, especially if you’re doing this in person, or in the case of an insurance claim. Potential buyers might also want to see the certificate when it’s time to sell.

MOT certificates can now be accessed online as well, but it’s useful to have the paper copy on hand.

Do garages still issue paper MOT certificates?

Not all MOT centres or garages will give you a paper MOT certificate as standard, but you can instantly view it online.

Some garages do still print the paper copy, but they’re not required by the DVSA to do so.

How to get an MOT certificate

If you’ve passed your MOT and been issued a certificate, you can view it online at the GOV.UK website.

You’ll just need the car’s registration plate, and you’ll be able to view its MOT history in full. This is also handy if you’re looking at buying a second-hand car, as you can check its MOT details beforehand.

If you want a paper copy, you can ask the garage to print your certificate. They’ll only do it on request in most cases; keeping things online to save paper, minimise opportunities for fraud and make your information accessible 24/7.

How to get a copy or replacement MOT certificate

You can get a new copy of your MOT certificate online. You’ll need to:

  1. Visit the GOV.UK website

  2. Enter your vehicle registration (number plate) and the 11-digit number from your logbook (V5C)

  3. Follow the online request system and request your MOT certificate for free

You can also visit the test centre or garage that carried out your MOT. They can charge up to £10 per certificate for cars, motorbikes and vans.

How to download or print your MOT certificate

Once you’ve accessed your MOT certificate online, you’ll have the option to save it as a PDF file and print it yourself.

This is obviously much easier than going back to the test centre to have them print your certificate, and means you can make as many copies as you need.

The government website warns not to use unofficial MOT record sites, as these are not licensed. Always go through the official UK government route.

What does an MOT certificate look like?

An MOT certificate looks more boring than it sounds – there's no fancy gold detailing or formal titles involved.

It’s simply a black and white document that states the make and model of your car, registration number, vehicle identification number and details of your car’s condition.

It will also show the expiration date, mileage history and where the test was carried out.

Can’t find your MOT certificate?

Losing your MOT certificate can be frustrating, but it’s not a huge deal. The online MOT records are accessible 24/7, so even in an urgent situation (like if someone is viewing your car before buying) you can still find proof of your MOT.

You can always head back to the test centre to ask them for a copy as well.
