Once a year, your car, along with everyone else’s in the UK, has to visit an MOT test centre to ensure it’s still road compliant.

Without a valid MOT certificate, you aren’t able to drive your car on the road, so it’s important to get the test right, and a big part of this is knowing what to bring along with you on the day.

Continue reading to find out exactly what you need to bring to your car’s MOT to make sure you don’t miss anything.

What documents do I need for an MOT?

V5C logbook

This is, without question, the most important document you need to bring with you.

This is especially required if it’s the vehicle’s first MOT or if you’ve recently changed its licence plate.

Valid licence

This isn’t usually checked by the garage, but it’s always good to bring your valid driving licence along with you just in case.

Valid car insurance

Car insurance also isn’t usually checked by the garage, but a car needs to be insured to drive on public roads and pass an MOT.

Locking wheel nut

It’s good practice to keep the locking wheel nut in the car at all times, just in case you need to change a wheel or tyre.

It’s not very big and looks like a bolt. It’s likely your car’s locking wheel nut is in the glovebox, doorbins or the boot somewhere.

Car keys

Obviously, they’ll need to keep keys for the MOT. Remove any keys you need from your car keys.

Hopefully you’d have your keys with you if you’ve driven to the MOT test, but it’s a pretty important thing to remember.

Just make sure to remove any other keys (house, shed, bike locks etc) from them before handing them over to the garage.

Payment method

If you haven’t prepaid, it’s good to have a payment method ready to go. Depending on yours and the garage’s preferences, this could be cash, card, contactless or other.

Book an MOT at cinch

Now you’ve got everything you need for your car’s MOT, it’s time to book one in, and there’s no better place to go than a cinch garage.

Simply book your car in at one of our stores, and we’ll take it from there.
