What does a forward collision warning feature do?

A forward collision warning system alerts the driver of a possible crash with a car in front, which can be slower moving or stationary. Think of it like another set of eyes on the road.

Sensors and cameras positioned at the front of the car scan the road ahead as it is moving. If it detects something, the driver is warned by a beeping sound, a vibrating steering wheel or a flashing light. If the driver doesn’t do anything, the car will automatically brake to minimise the effects of the crash. Some systems also work with collision avoidance software, which can help steer a car around something that it could crash into. The most sophisticated systems can also spot pedestrians, animals and even work in the dark.
