Ford Grand C-Max revealed as UK’s fastest-selling car
Our latest data highlights the most popular cars in the UK
Fastest-selling cars
It's official: the Ford Grand C-Max is the fastest-selling car in the UK. We've reviewed sales data on our website and app from January to April 2024, and it's the family-friendly MPV that takes the crown.
Based on the average number of days it took to sell each model, the all-electric Polestar 2 came home second, with other heavy-hitters like the Tesla Model Y also featuring.
The list paints an interesting picture about the models that buyers don't hesitate to snap up, and how rarity plays a big part in their kerb appeal.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, said: “To find out which models are the most in-demand, we reviewed how quickly each model of car was sold on our website and app between 1 January and 30 April 2024.
“The family-favourite Grand C-Max took top spot, but perhaps the most interesting trend we're seeing is in the growing popularity of sought-after electric vehicles, such as the Polestar 2 and Honda e.”
“Backed by Volvo and with a distinctive design, the Polestar 2 is one of the most in-demand electric cars on sale today. This is thanks to its impeccable build quality and an impressive 406-mile range in the top-spec Long Range Single Motor model.
“Volvo's safety credentials and its Swedish reputation for quality engineering make this a hugely popular car with buyers on cinch.”
Practicality and performance
The seven-seat Grand C-Max is the definition of practical. Available with both petrol and diesel engines, it holds strong as a top pick for young families.
An affordable and well-sized MPV, it ticks most boxes for those looking for a reliable everyday runner.
Our list also shows that SUVs and MPVs are staying put at the top of the tree, with six of the top 10 falling into these categories.
Buyers can't get enough of the practicality, performance and commanding driving position of stylish models such as the Peugeot 5008 and Cupra Formentor.
Sam explained that Peugeot's model continues to wow buyers looking for an attractive yet practical motor.
“The 5008 is a seven-seater family car with swagger,” he said. “Not only does it turn heads, but it’s an incredibly practical vehicle for a large family. These cars sell fast for a good reason, and with diesel and petrol engines available, there’s a good selection to choose from.”
Electric cars causing a buzz
Three of the top 10 fastest-selling cars we sold between January and April 2024 were all-electric (Polestar 2, Tesla Model Y and Honda e).
Compare that to a list from the same period in 2023, when none of the top 10 fastest-sellers were electric vehicles (EVs):
Drivers are more interested than ever in getting behind the wheel of greener, more eco-conscious models – there are as many as one million EVs on the road in the UK as of March 2024.
One of the picks of the bunch, the Honda e takes sixth place in our 2024 list.
Sam said: “The Honda e is one of the most fascinating electric cars on the market. Not only can its infotainment system turn into a virtual fish tank, but it’s also got cameras for door mirrors and an eye-catching wooden interior trim.
“If you live in a city or just need a small car to do your weekly errands, there are not many better options than Honda’s smallest car.”
Small but perfectly formed
Affordable hatchbacks continue to fly off the shelves in the UK, which could reflect how the tough economic climate has used car buyers wary of their spending.
In fact, four of the top 10 fastest-sellers are hatchbacks, including Hyundai's i10 and Suzuki's pint-sized Celerio.
The only car to feature as a fastest seller on the lists from 2023 and 2024 was the Suzuki Celerio, cementing the staying power of economical hatchbacks.
Buyers can snap up a low-mileage Celerio for well under £10,000, meaning they continue to deliver good value for money.
Sam said: "Hatchbacks tick a lot of boxes for buyers, particularly those doing a lot of driving in urban areas. The Hyundai i10 is a well-built, reliable runaround that also puts a smile on your face while out on the road.
"The growing popularity of SUVs is clear to see, but we shouldn't forget that a hatchback continues to be the car of choice for millions of drivers across the UK – particularly with buyers on a tight budget."
Familiar names in best-seller list
We also crunched the numbers to find out the overall top 10 best-selling cars from the first four months of 2024:
Yes, you guessed it. The best-selling car of all time in the UK stays at the top – the Ford Fiesta.
Maybe it will become even more popular since the US manufacturer stopped production of it in July 2023.
Sam said: "All these cars will be familiar with UK car buyers, and many of us will have owned or driven at least one of them.
"The list is a reminder that many buyers still plump for a familiar favourite, despite the growing popularity of newer entrants to the market – particularly in the world of EVs."
