Demand for new electric cars is skyrocketing, leaving huge waiting times as Brits turn to used EVs

As motorists look at used EVs, we've highlighted a few things to look out for before buying an electric car

evs

The world of electric vehicles is heading in the right direction, fast! But as the electric car market continues to boom in the UK, with more than a quarter of a million EVs now out on the road, this rapid rise in popularity has created a slight speed bump. This is because some Brits are having to wait more than a year to get their hands on a new electric car. Ouch.

This has led to motorists into looking at used EVs as a way around the ongoing electric car shortage. If you're in the market for a used EV, you’re in the right place! We have a wide range of electric cars available to buy in our online showroom, and they can be on your driveway in as little as one week. Plus, all the EVs we have on sale are within the manufacturer’s warranty, giving you that extra peace of mind.

Why is there a shortage on new EVs?

The lengthy wait times for a new EV are nothing new, sadly. They've been ongoing for almost a year now due to supply chain issues. Covid (unsurprisingly) is one of the main factors, with lockdowns across the world causing huge issues for the supply chain. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also had a huge impact on the production line. This is because key components are sourced from Ukraine, meaning manufacturers are not able to meet the huge demand for EVs.

What to consider for when buying a used EV...

Battery range

When eyeing up an electric car, it’s important to understand its range. This is measured in miles, and it’s simply the distance the car can travel on a full charge. Like petrol cars and their fuel consumption, range can depend on a number of factors. Your driving style plays a huge role, and the more efficiently you drive, the more miles you will get out of your battery.

It’s important to consider how much range you need. For some, 100+ miles of range is plenty for their city-driving habits, while others may require a bit more juice. Those drivers should look at cars with plenty of range (200+ miles) for longer journeys.

Charging

When it comes to charging up your EV, there are a couple of things you need to bear in mind – the time it would take to charge your car, and where you plan to charge it.

You can charge from home with a professionally installed charge point, which is more powerful and therefore provides a faster charge. You can also use a traditional three-pin plug at home, but this takes much longer. See our detailed guides on charging EVs below:

Servicing and maintenance

Perhaps the best news about buying a used EV is the low cost of servicing and maintenance.

EVs have very few components, so there’s a lot less to go wrong with them. There are also fewer elements that need to be serviced too – there are no oil filters to be replaced, for example. So that's an added bonus, plus you don't need to stress about the rising fuel prices!
