MG S5 EV first drive and review

Is this affordable MG a real winner or does BYD and Kia still rule the roost?

MG has been producing hit after hit for years now, and the new MG S5 EV is proof they've still got what it takes – and more.

With a new look inside and out, loads of tech and a very attractive price, it's hard to ignore among truly compelling rivals.

Sam's driven the MG S5 EV to see if it really is as good as rivals from BYD and Kia.

MG S5 EV range and battery:

There are a number of different MG S5 EVs on offer, starting with the Standard Range SE, which has a 47.1kWh battery and gets a 211-mile range.

But the top-spec car we drove is called the S5 EV Long Range, which has a larger 61.7kWh battery with 298 miles of range.

Then, when you need to charge it again, it can be done at up to 170kW (125kW on the Standard Range SE) – taking as little as 28 minutes to go from 10-80% charge.

MG S5 EV trims and prices:

MG offers three trims for the S5 EV, and prices are seriously competitive.

  • MG S5 EV Standard Range SE – £28,495

  • MG S5 EV Long Range – £30,995

  • MG S5 EV Trophy Long Range – £33,495

This means it undercuts both its Kia EV3 rival (£32,215) and BYD ATTO 3 rival (£37,695) by a healthy amount.
