Overview of the Land Rover 3.0 TDV6 engine

The 3.0-litre TDV6 engine (also known by its engine code: 306DT AJD-V6) is one of the greatest things Land Rover has ever made.

Not only is it a staple in its lineup of cars, but it’s also reliable and efficient – two of the best qualities an engine can have, especially in Land Rover’s go-anywhere do-anything cars.

Being a diesel, it also produces plenty of torque and decent power, making it great for all types of driving.

Is the TDV6 a reliable engine?

Having been around since 2009, Land Rover’s 3.0 TDV6 has proved reliable, so much so that it’s still available in cars today such as the Discovery.

From what forums and owners are saying, the TDV6 is a dependable block that can run for well over 100,000 miles, as long as it’s been cared for and regularly maintained.

If anything does go wrong, this engine is relatively easy to repair because it’s so simple in its design.

Land Rover 3.0 TDV6 Engine: Key features

Another reason this engine is so popular and is still used in Land Rovers today stems back to its key features.

Firstly, there’s a reason that most modern engines use turbochargers, and it’s because they boost (pardon the pun) efficiency and power. The TDV6? Well, it’s got two of them.

It also uses the process of variable valve timing (VVT), which improves fuel economy and reduces emissions – particularly important in the eco-friendly world we now live in.

3.0 TDV6 engine performance capabilities

Land Rover’s 3.0 TDV6 isn’t the most performance-focused engine in the world and in fact, it’s usually labelled as the ‘entry level’.

Horsepower varies depending on the car it’s in, but on average it produces 250hp – plenty for most driving scenarios.

Being a diesel, you also get plenty of torque at (around) 600Nm, which makes towing a caravan or boat a breeze.

Diesel engines are also known for their fuel efficiency, with the newer versions getting around 40mpg.

This isn’t as much as others but respectable for a car weighing north of two tonnes and plenty for eating up the motorway miles.

Which Land Rover models have the 3.0 TDV6 engine?

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been making and using the 3.0 TDV6 engine in its cars since 2009 and still does to this day.
