What is XPENG?
XPENG, despite being founded in 2014, is only now making its way into the UK, disrupting the market in many ways.
What does XPENG stand for?
XPENG doesn’t directly stand for anything and instead is a shortened version of the founder’s name: He Xiaopeng.
The name ‘Xiaopeng’ directly translates to ‘Little Roc’, referring to the mythical bird, or ‘Little Friend’, though this doesn’t have much to do with the car maker itself.
Who are XPENG cars for?
There are a range of different buyers who will be interested in XPENG cars, though they’re not limited to these, of course.
Some include:
Tech-savvy professionals
Environmentally conscious individuals
Early adopters of new technology
Premium car buyers, who previously bought Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc
Who makes XPENG cars?
XPENG designs and builds all of its own cars, keeping everything in-house. It has a number of manufacturing facilities across China, making hundreds of thousands of cars every year.
Who owns XPENG?
XPENG is mostly owned by He Xiaopeng, who has the majority stake in the business. Other shareholders include Alibaba Group, Xiaomi and the Volkswagen Group.
These are some big names behind a new brand to help propel it forward as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Where are XPENG cars from?
All XPENG cars are from China, with the headquarters being situated in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.
Where are XPENG cars made?
XPENG cars were born out of the brand’s self-owned, purpose-built car factories in Zhaoqing, Guangzhou and Wuhan in China.
Full XPENG model lineup
XPENG X9
If you want a smart seven-seater luxury MPV, the X9 is the one to have. It has a low drag coefficient of just 0.227, which means it slips through the air like a bird. It’s also full of incredible features like the world’s first wrap-around central air-con system and a hot and cold drawer for drinks.
It’s expected to hit the UK in 2026.
XPENG G9
The large luxury SUV segment is a hard market to track into, but the XPENG X9 offers great looks and features at a competitive price. It also has a 360-mile range and a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds, which for a large SUV is very impressive.
It’s expected in the UK towards the end of 2026.
XPENG G6
One XPENG model that’s already in the UK is the G6 – a true Tesla Model Y rival.
It has a self-proclaimed starship-inspired exterior and can rapid charge, adding 265 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
This model has been readily available across the UK since early 2025.
XPENG P7
If you want more of a saloon, the XPENG P7 may be up your street, with its sleek looks and an impressive 350-mile range. Not to mention a rapid 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds.
We expect it’ll come to the UK in due course.
What is the smallest XPENG car?
The smallest car XPENG makes is called the MONA M03, and it’s an electric saloon car not available in the UK.
What is the fastest XPENG car?
This would be the XPENG G9 Performance AWD, which has 550hp and a rapid 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds.
XPENG prices and value
To enter successfully into any car market, a car brand has to price itself right to compete with existing models. XPENG knows that and has acted accordingly.
How much is an XPENG car?
The XPENG G6 – the first model to arrive in the UK – started at £39,990 at launch, putting it at around £5,000 cheaper than the equivalent Tesla Model Y.
As more XPENG models arrive, we expect pricing to remain as competitive as possible, undercutting rivals where it can.
What is the cheapest XPENG car?
Even when more of the current model range arrive in the UK, the XPENG G6 will probably still be the cheapest at around £40,000 new.
But buy a used one and you can save a lot on top of that.
XPENG range and charging
One thing that sets many new Chinese EV brands apart from more traditional car manufacturers is the battery technology, which can be leaps and bounds ahead of more established brands.
What is the range of an XPENG car?
The XPENG G6 has a range of up to 354 miles between charges, and we think this is a good baseline to work with.
Future models will only come with faster charging and bigger ranges.
How much does it cost to charge an XPENG G9?
This depends on which battery size you go for. The XPENG G9 comes with either a 75kWh or 93kWh battery.
These are big batteries, so a full charge at a public rapid charger would cost considerably more than an off-peak overnight charge at home.
Prices will vary depending on the rates, but let’s say a public charge could cost upwards of £60, whereas a home charge could be just a few pounds.
XPENG reliability and ownership
Safety and reliability are two massive buzzwords in the car world, and for good reason.
A safe and dependable car is what most buyers are looking for, and new entrants into the market have to make sure they comply with various safety regulations.
Are XPENG cars good?
Just like any brand looking to be a major player in the space, XPENG is doing the best it can and succeeding at a rapid pace.
Abhishek Sampat, head of electric vehicles at cinch, said: “XPENG has quickly proven itself as one of the most innovative players in the EV space.
"While still a relatively young brand, XPENG is delivering features and build quality that can absolutely stand alongside established names in the industry. For customers looking for the next motoring tech-fest and solid value, XPENG is definitely a good choice.”
How reliable are XPENG cars?
On the whole, electric cars are much more reliable than their internal combustion engine counterparts. This is because the electric motors have fewer moving parts and therefore are less likely to go wrong.
It’s still early days for XPENG cars, but we see no reason why they wouldn’t be dependable vehicles.
As for safety, the G6, P7 and G9 have all been independently crash tested by Euro NCAP and all scored a full five stars.
