Most reliable features of the Peugeot 508
The Peugeot 508 comes with a three-year warranty that has unlimited mileage for the first two years, and then is locked to 60,000 miles in the final year. This gives you faith that Peugeot trusts its car.
In fact, Peugeot as a whole has ramped it up for reliability over the last few years, and models like the 508 have benefitted from this.
The 508 also scores well on reliability reviews and gets praise in the forums, but which parts stand out?
Engine
There’s a large range of engines in the 508 line-up, and they’re all dependable, whether you fancy petrol, diesel, or hybrid.
You’ll be able to find 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol models in 180hp and 225hp configurations, or a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo. That last option can get up to 50mpg.
The 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines are even better on fuel, getting up to 63.3mpg. These get up to 63.6mpg.
You can now go for a plug-in hybrid 508, which is good for 217mpg and 33 miles of electric-only range.
Safety
Safety is a big selling point for any car, and family cars especially, and this puts the 508 in a good spot. Awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2019 (with a child occupant rating of 86% and 96% for adults), it’s a pretty secure motor.
An engine safety brake system is standard on the latest models, which is designed to help avoid collisions by slowing the car if needed.
There’s also blind spot monitoring from the Allure Premium trim onwards, as well as adaptive cruise control with stop and go.
Interior
Inside the Peugeot 508 feels tough but still sleek. It’s the kind of interior that’s not going to be upset by crumbs falling under car seats and the occasional bashing when the answer to ‘Are we there yet?’ is ‘No’. And it’s handsome enough that it still feels a treat to drive, despite all its practicalities.
There’s a 487-litre boot at the rear, plus the cabin is spacious enough to fill all the seats and still be comfortable.
The ten-inch infotainment screen is easy to use and uses Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smooth smartphone pairing.
Peugeot 508 compared to other cars
We’ve made our case for Peugeot 508 reliability, but how do its rivals perform?
Vauxhall Insignia
The Vauxhall Insignia is often considered alongside the 508 and they’re similar in a lot of ways.
In 2019, they were both given five-star ratings by Euro NCAP and their adult and child occupant safety scores are similar, too.
It's praised in forums and reviews for its reliability, as well.
Like the 508, the Insignia got a three-year warranty from brand-new, also good for up to 60,000 miles.
Volkswagen Passat
Similar to the 508 and the Insignia, the VW Passat also got a five-star Euro NCAP rating in X and a three-year warranty from new.
The Passat is also one of the most popular saloons on the market, plus it benefits from VW’s reputation for reliability – typically claiming a spot among the top ten.
The Passat itself gets high praise in reviews and driver feedback, so it's one to be relied on.
Ford Mondeo
The Ford Mondeo is a classic pick, and one that measures up to the Peugeot 508.
It scored a full five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2019, with an impressive 96% for adult occupants and 87% for children.
It gets the same warranty as the 508, Passat and Insignia – the three-year set-up that’s pretty standard across the industry.
Plus, reviews across the board are positive for reliability.
What to look out for when buying a Peugeot 508
If you’re looking at a used Peugeot 508 (or any used car for that matter), there are a few things to keep in mind for buying a reliable used car.
Car retailers worth their salt will have a full inspection process, and you’ll have somewhere to go back to for aftercare
Private sellers can be cheaper but are also a bigger risk – you might want to bring your petrol head friend for a second opinion
Make sure your car has the right documents – you'll want to check things like the service history and V5C
The government website also has a function where you can check the MOT history and other details about the car
