Between the A4 and A6, the A4 is the sportier-looking model and is the one to pick if you want something with flair.
The A6 is still sophisticated and sleek, and you can upgrade each model with the S line trim to be even sportier.
This adds larger alloys to both cars and details like illuminated aluminium door sills and larger air vents.
Both cars do look similar, but the A6 has a more curvaceous shape than the chiselled A4.
The LED headlights and rear lights differ too, with the A6 lights sitting flat while the A4 are more angled.
Both cars come in Saloon, Avant (estate) and Allroad body shapes.
What are they like to drive?

Driving an Audi will never disappoint, and the A6 and A4 are great examples of that.
Each model is comfortable and performs well on motorway drives and quick trips around town.
The A4 is slightly smaller, so the A6 cabin might feel a nicer place to be on long trips.
The A4 does offer a wider range of engines, with three petrol and three diesels on offer.
You’ll also get a choice of seven-speed S tronic transmission or six-speed manual.
The 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol model is perfect for driving around town, while the 2.0-litre TDI option is suited for longer road trips.
The A6 offers a relaxed drive that feels ever-so luxe. It’s quiet on motorways, and you can choose a plug-in hybrid model for hot acceleration with an efficient drive.

The A6 gets twin leather seats as standard, while the A4 will need to be upgraded to the S line trim to move past the standard Index cloth upholstery.
The A6 also gets double the infotainment screens, but you’ll still have to upgrade to the Vorsprung trim to get Audi’s Virtual Cockpit. This is something you get as standard in the A4, but with only one infotainment screen.
The overall styling of the cars falls mostly in the A6’s favour. It looks luxurious and premium, and the double screens really help to pull off the prestige finish.
The standard Virtual Cockpit in the A4 will have this model the winner for most people, however it’s a brilliant feature that displays all your car’s stats and your sat-nav where your instrument cluster would usually be.
Bootspace and practicality

As the bigger car, you won’t be shocked that the A6 has more space overall. You’ll get 530 litres of bootspace in the Saloon option and 586 litres in the Avant estate.
The cabin in the A6 is spacious and comfortable, and the hard-wearing materials are ideal for daily use. This one is a great hybrid of usability and luxury, so it’s perfect for a fancy school run or glammed-up commute.
The A4 is by no means feeble when it comes to size. The A4 Saloon has 460 litres of bootspace and 495 litres in the Avant estate.
As the A6 Saloon is 200mm longer than the A4 option, there’s more legroom on offer. If you plan to have slightly taller backseat passengers, they might thank you for choosing the A6.

Safety and reliability
Both the Audi A4 and Audi A6 received a full five-star safety rating on their most recent Euro NCAP safety test, meaning they’re able to keep you secure in the event of a crash.
Adult occupants in the A6 received a 93% safety rating, with 85% for children. The A4 received 89% for adults and 87% for children, so respectable ratings all round.
In general, both models score highly for reliability. They rank well on consumer reliability tests and get positive reviews from their drivers.
The A6 does seem to just take the edge for reliability, but models like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class are ranked as more dependable overall.
