Trying to decide between the Audi A5 and Audi A6? We call out the highlights of each model in our A5 vs. A6 comparison review

A comparison of the Audi A5 and Audi A6

Deciding between the Audi A5 and Audi A6 isn’t a bad problem to have – these are two premium cars with a lot to offer.

We walk you through the highlights of each used Audi with our A5 vs A6 review, so you can decide who wins for you.

Styling

A comparison of the Audi A5 and A6 styling

The Audi A5 and A6 both have one thing in common: they’re both stunning cars.

The A5 is the sportier of the two and will catch the eye of any motorist after something that looks menacing. You can choose from coupé and convertible body styles, as well as the sharp Sportback.

With the A6, you’re getting a sophisticated and sleeker design that isn’t quite as fierce as the A5. It’s undoubtedly a gorgeous car with the premium Audi feel, but it’s a more classic look overall.

You can choose from the A6 Saloon, Avant estate, or four-wheel Allroad, so there’s plenty of choice – and each is very easy on the eye.

You’ll love the combination of sharp angles and smooth, swooping sides – they have the handsome look of an Audi, which is timeless and sophisticated.

What are they like to drive?

Both the A5 and A6 offer a relaxing drive that’s smooth and comfortable. While you do get a classic pop of Audi power, the main focus is an enjoyable cruise that feels premium.

There is a range of engines available with each model, and choices for automatic and manual gears.

The Audi A5 has a choice of 35, 40, and 45 TFSI petrol models with the same turbocharged 2.0-litres set-up. The 45 TFSI option offers 248hp that’s a lot of fun to drive.

There are the 35 and 40 TDI diesel models too, which are better suited for longer journeys.

In the A6, you get mild hybrid tech that pairs with all engines. Choose from 2.0-litre options like the 55 TFSI or 40 TDI, or opt for a full plug-in hybrid 50 TFSIe.

Interior and technology

A comparison of the Audi A5 and A6 interior

The interior of both cars is impressive, but the A6 pushes the luxury feel just slightly more than the A5.

The A6 feels high-quality and premium throughout the whole cabin, featuring two touchscreens and the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit. It’s like driving in a tech store – everything is controlled via these screens.

In the A5, the interior feels prestigious and top-class. It sits behind the A6 in terms of tech, with a single infotainment screen and the impressive Virtual Cockpit.

Both cars get access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity, and the Virtual Cockpit is used as a clear and crisp sat nav.

The layout of the cabins is also stunning, but it’s hard-wearing enough that you’ll know it’s safe for daily use.

Choosing a used Audi A5 or A6 model can be a handy way to grab extra features and tech but at a lower price point than buying brand-new.

Bootspace and practicality

The bootspace in your Audi model will depend on the vehicle you choose, but neither is stingy.

The A5 Cabriolet convertible model offers 370 litres, while the Sportback model offers 465 litres. The A5 Coupe gets 450 litres, and the comfortable cabin makes this a great car for daily use.

The A6 model is more spacious and has even more room at the rear. The A6 Saloon offers 530 litres, with 565 litres in the Avant and Allroad.

The A6 models are also more spacious in the cabin. If you know you’re going to be travelling with backseat passengers a lot then this is the one to pick, but the A5 is still roomy and comfortable for those who travel light.

Safety and reliability

Both models were awarded a full five-star safety rating on their most recent Euro NCAP test.

The A6 received an impressive 93% adult occupant rating, while child occupants received 86%. Slightly lower than the A6, the A5 scored 89% for adults and 87% for children.

The A6 also scores well for reliability, with positive reviews and fair results on consumer reliability surveys.

The A5 performs well too, ranking about the same for reviews and survey results.

Audi has not always been considered the most reliable manufacturer, but Audi models have seen improvements in reviews in recent years.

It's also worth noting that a premium car like an Audi A5 or A6 can mean higher repair costs. These models use high-quality parts that are pricier to purchase but often last longer than standard or budget options.

Verdict: Audi A5 vs. Audi A6: which should you buy?

Both the Audi A5 and A6 are undoubtedly impressive cars, but each has its own strengths that are likely to help you decide which is the best for you.

The A5 offers a sporty look and flashy interior with a great choice of engines.

This is the one to pick if you want something smaller with that quintessentially Audi feel.

Worthy rivals to the A5 include the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3 Series.

For something with more space and extra levels of luxury, any A6 model will be well suited.

You can’t get the convertible styling that the A5 Cabriolet offers, but you can get an efficient plug-in hybrid engine and sleek saloon shapes.

For an alternative, it’s worth looking at the Audi Q5, Mercedes E-Class, or BMW 5 Series.
