Trying to choose between the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series? See which luxury saloon suits you in our comparison review

The Audi A6 Saloon and BMW 5 Series Saloon are both sleek cars with strong engines – you’ll have a tough time deciding between the two.

Plus, there are plenty of impressive deals to be had on used Audi and used BMW models if you want to save money compared to buying brand-new.

We compare the styling, performance, reliability and practicality of each model to find out which is better suited for you, in our Audi A6 vs. BMW 5 Series review.

Styling

A comparison of the styling on the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series

When it comes to the Audi A6 vs. the BMW 5 Series - both are stunning cars. BMW has highlighted a menacing and sporty look while Audi has gone for classically handsome.

In the 5 Series, you’ll get the classic BMW kidney grille on the front and a more aggressive feel. You can choose to upgrade to the M Sport model and get touches like larger 18-19-inch alloys, anthracite headlining, and a glossy Shadowline exterior trim.

The A6 looks as much like an Audi as the 5 Series does a BMW – they're both prime examples of their manufacturer’s style.

With a curvy shape and angular details, the A6 has a more reserved feel than the edgy 5 Series but is still eye-catching.

You can upgrade the A6 with the Sport trim and also get larger alloys, matte black side air intake, and a titanium black front grille.

Choosing a used BMW 5 Series or Audi A6 is a great way to secure additional features and tech that would be more expensive when purchasing brand-new.

What are they like to drive?

With the premium badge that sits on the front, it’s no surprise that both models feel great behind the wheel.

The A6 is a great choice for slick everyday driving. It’s reserved and comfortable but doesn’t prioritise a sporty feel or performance edge.

When you compare the A6 and the 5 Series, the 5 Series feels like the less-sensible option with several pacey engines to pick from. It’s still comfortable and ideal for daily use thanks to the economical diesel options, but it feels nipper and more agile.

Both models get the option of a 2.0-litre turbodiesel paired with automatic gearboxes that feel smooth and quick, with some reviews saying the BMW just takes the edge.

In the A6, you can also choose four-wheel steering and adaptive dampers, allowing a driving experience that can be adapted according to the terrain. It’s a handy touch if you like to really be in tune with your cruise.

Interior and technology

The interior in both models is impressive too, but Audi nails it when it comes to luxe cabins.

While the BMW is undoubtedly luxurious and well laid-out, the A6 feels exceptionally high-quality and quiet inside.

The 5 Series interior features a touchscreen that can also be navigated by BMW’s famous rotary controller. The iDrive system is easy to work with too, adding to the driving experience rather than making it fussier.

The A6 is still brilliant in comparison, offering the Audi MMI infotainment system and the option to upgrade with the added Audi Virtual Cockpit.

Both cars also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, plus automatic climate control.

Bootspace and practicality

A comparison of the backseat in the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series

The varied range of models in the Audi A6 lineup means you get a choice of boot sizes. The A6 Saloon offers 530 litres, while the chunky Allroad and Avant estate have 565 litres.

The cabin in all A6 models is comfortable even in the rear. There’s another leg and headroom that your backseat passengers will be comfortable with, and the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable.

The 5 Series is practical too, with the Saloon supplying 530 litres in the rear with 570 from the BMW 5 Series estate boot space. The Touring is the one to pick if you want to travel with large loads, while the saloon is spacious but isn’t quite as practically shaped.

You’ll get ISOFIX car seat points in all models, making it ideal for travelling with kids.

Verdict: Audi A6 vs. BMW 5 Series: which should you buy?

The Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series are both impressive cars that are good at pretty much the same jobs. They're stylish, enjoyable to drive, comfortable to sit in, and still practical for daily use.

It's worth baring in mind that both options are considered luxury cars. While they're well-built and should stand up to wear and tear, repair costs can be more expensive due to the high-quality parts.

The 5 Series might be the better option if you prefer a feisty engine that offers a pop of power. It’s a spacious model that will fit into your daily life but is still exciting when you want it to be.

Worthy rivals to the 5 Series include the Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF.

The Audi A6 is another worthy opponent to the 5 Series that measures up on all levels. You get a particularly impressive interior and infotainment setup, and the Audi styling is something you can’t get anywhere else. This might be the one to choose if you want relaxed luxury and classic style.

If you like the A6, the Mercedes C-Class and Volvo XC60 might also be of interest.
