We run through some of our favourite cars with the biggest boot space in our guide below.

Which car has the biggest boot?

  • BMW X7

  • Skoda Superb Estate

  • Volkswagen Touareg

  • Ford Puma

  • Range Rover

  • Honda Civic

  • Tesla Model Y

  • Land Rover Defender

  • Mercedes GLS

BMW X7

BMW X7 front

  • Boot space in five-seat mode: 750 litres

  • Boot space in seven-seat mode: 326 litres

  • Boot space with all rear seats folded down: 2,120 litres

The largest of BMW's SUVs has one of the biggest usable boots on the market (unless you opt for a van-based people carrier).

The BMW X7 has an official boot capacity of 750 litres, and while some other models actually beat that, the X7's boxy shape means you can use more of the space.

Twelve carry-on suitcases fit in its boot, and there's still space for five passengers!

Skoda Superb Estate

Skoda Superb side

  • Boot space with all seats in place: 660 litres

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: 1,950 litres

Estate cars are usually a good bet if you’re looking for a vehicle with a sizeable boot, and the Skoda Superb is a great option.

Skoda priorities comfortable and spacious cars, and the Superb’s 660-litre boot is a cavernous space for swallowing up whatever you need to carry.

Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen Touareg front

  • Boot space with all seats in place: 810 litres

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: 1,800 litres

Large SUVs are a good bet if you're looking for a bootylicious car, so the Volkswagen Touareg won’t disappoint.

An official capacity of 810 litres is impressive, but tests also show that it’s possible to squeeze in 10 carry-ons in the Touareg, if you need to.

Like the X7 above, that still leaves lots of space for five passengers ahead.

Plus, you can bag an impressive deal by choosing a used Volkswagen option.

Ford Puma – 456 litres

  • Boot space with all seats in place: 456 litres

The Ford Puma has plenty of boot space, despite being a smaller platform than the Ford Focus (though the Puma makes up for it in height).

Open the tailgate on this used Ford and you'll see 456 litres of usable space in the boot, with a flat floor to make loading easier.

But lift the floor and there are 80 litres in a rubber-lined box, which even comes with a plug so you can hose it out. Perfect for the wellies!

Range Rover

Range Rover front three quarters

  • Boot space with all seats in place: up to 909 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: up to 2,030 litres

If you're looking for maximum space in an uber-posh package, look no further than the Range Rover.

This luxury SUV has space for 800 litres of theoretical luggage – which essentially means the family suitcases, boxes of continental wine and bags of Wine Gums should fit in, no problem.

Best of all, you'll earn hero status using a high-end car so effectively.

Honda Civic

Honda Civic driving

  • Boot space with all seats in place: up to 478 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: up to 1,220 litres

While technically a hatchback, the extended rear-end of the Honda Civic means it offers much more boot space than conventional alternatives.

In fact, there are around 100 litres in there more than most of the Civic's rivals, with up to 478 litres of space meaning you should get around five carry on cases in the back.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla Model Y rear three quarters

  • Boot space with all seats in place: up to 854 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: up to 2,138 litres

If you want a car that's as spacious as it is flashy, the Tesla Model Y is for you.

With a 854-litre boot even with all seats in the place, the Model Y is top of its class before you even consider the 117-litre 'frunk' (front trunk) that sits under the bonnet.

Land Rover Defender

Land Rover Defender 90 on sand

  • Boot space in the seven-seat model (five seats in place): 743 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space in the five-seat model with five seats in place: up to 786 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: up to 2,233 litres

The Land Rover Defender is a top pick for drivers who fancy tackling all terrain in proper luxury, and the massive boot is definitely a bonus.

There's a choice of five, six, seven or eight person seating configurations, so lots of flexibility.

All options have loads of boot space, though you do lose a bit if you use the third row of seats.

Mercedes GLS

A grey mercedes gls

  • Boot space in the seven-seat model (five seats in place): 890 litres depending on the model

  • Boot space with rear seats folded down: up to 2,400 litres

The Mercedes GLS is another swanky seven-seater that can't be sniffed at for boot space.

You get that premium Mercedes styling and feel, with room for multiple suitcases or whatever else you might need to travel with.

Boot space drops to 355 litres with the third seat in use, so level with a typical hatchback.

Cars with flat loading boot space

If you specifically need a car with good boot space that also happens to be flat-loading, there are some models to consider.

The Volvo V60 offers some models that have a completely flat rear loading area with the seats folded. Look out for options like the Inscription and anything above to get that feature.

The Skoda Octavia also has a flat loading area of up to 1,555 litres that's ideal for fitting all the extras.

Another option to consider is the Renault Clio. This model offers up to 1,069 litres of rear loading space and a completely flat floor.

If you want an SUV with a flat-loading boot, the Hyundai Santa Fe is a great pick. This one offers up to 1,625 litres of space.
