The best Citroën car will deliver exactly what you need from it, so which is the best might differ between you and your friend.
Whether it’s the best-looking Citroën or one that excels in practicality or comfort, there’s a model for everyone.
Here’s a quick guide to some standout models and what makes each one great in its category.
What is the best Citroën car?
Citroën C5 Aircross
Citroën C5 X
Citroën C3
Citroën C3 Aircross
Citroën ë-C4
Citroën Ami
Which Citroën car is the best?
Families – Citroën C5 Aircross
Our pick: Citroën C5 Aircross 1.2 Hybrid Plus
The Citroën C5 Aircross is a superb family SUV thanks to its perfect blend of comfort, practicality and affordability.
Our favourite feature is its Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension that delivers a smooth ride on all manner of road surfaces, and the Advanced Comfort Seats add an extra layer of vibration reduction.
Its spacious interior includes three individually sliding rear seats, making it easy to install child seats while maximising passenger and boot space. And on that note, the 580-litre boot is right at the top of its class.
The plug-in hybrid engine is great, and offers up to 38 miles of electric-only range, but we’d settle for the 136hp 1.2-litre mild hybrid, which manages around a third to half of town trips with the engine off, in our experience.
Motorway drivers – Citroën C5 X
Our pick: Citroën C5 X 1.6 PHEV Shine Plus
The Citroën C5 X is one of the best-suited cars for motorway driving there is. If you thought the C5 Aircross was comfortable, then combine all that tech with sleek aerodynamics for a refined motorway cruise.
Somehow, Citroën has managed to make a car that has spacious front seats, spacious rear seats and a well-sized boot, while combining all the features we love from SUVs, estates and saloons. Take the 545-litre boot, for example. We’re talking SUV levels of space.
In this case, we’d recommend the plug-in hybrid model. It’ll do 34 miles on battery power, which is perfect for traffic jams, and you can even preserve juice with the e-Save mode to finish your trip in the city with zero tailpipe emissions. With 225hp, it’s also plenty punchy enough for those overtaking manoeuvres.
Learners – Citroën C3
Our pick: Citroën ë-C3 Plus
It doesn’t get much better than a used Citroën C3 for learner drivers, because you get the compact supermini dimensions that really help you build your confidence. The latest model is a supermini-sized crossover, so you can have that rugged look without having to get into a bigger car that’s harder to park.
As standard, all crossover-styled models have a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control and plenty of safety kit, but the best part is that big-car tech is now trickling down into the C3, so you also get Advanced Comfort Seats and Advanced Comfort Suspension.
The 100hp petrol engine is plenty powerful enough, but the 136hp mild hybrid system might be more economical. We’d recommend the 113hp electric ë-C3, because it could significantly reduce your running costs – a really big consideration in your early years of motoring.
Retired drivers – Citroën C3 Aircross
Our pick: Citroën C3 Aircross 1.2 Hybrid Plus
If you like how small the C3 is but you need something that’s easier to get in and out of, the C3 Aircross is a very sensible pick, with its raised ride height and high-up driving position, which improves outward visibility.
The second-generation C3 Aircross might be available as a seven-seater, but we’d stick to the five-seat format. The rear seats are further back for best-in-class legroom, but the 460-litre boot is still more than you’d get in family hatchbacks from the class above.
Plus, it’s all about simplicity, so if you want a faff-free crossover, take your pick of petrol power (with or without mild hybrid assistance) or electric motors. We love being able to plug in overnight and waking up to a fully charged car.
Towns and cities – Citroën ë-C4
Our pick: Citroën ë-C4 Shine Plus
The Citroën C4 was the French brand’s first hint that it was going down the SUV route – now a stylish coupé-SUV, the C4 used to be a hatchback.
It excels in urban environments where its smooth ride, modern design and efficient powertrains stand out, but because it’s lower than a conventional SUV, it’ll feel more agile, which is great for nipping in and out of side streets.
We’re specifically recommending the ë-C4 model because zero tailpipe emissions means clearer air in congested cities, but you’ll be doing a lot of stop-start driving, so you’ll reap the rewards of the regenerative braking system. It’ll add otherwise wasted energy back into the battery, and you’ll reduce the wear on your brake pads.
Fun second car – Citroën Ami
Most of us drive a car that’s way bigger than we need, and while SUVs and seven-seaters are great for family life, they can be pricey to run and hard to park.
That’s why we love the Citroën Ami, which is 2.41m long, 1.39m wide and 1.52m high. Citroën says it’ll fit in half a parking space, so the question is, if you and your mate get one each, are you splitting the cost of a parking ticket or getting one each?
The 46-mile range might not sound much, but that’ll more than cover your run to the supermarket. Just bear in mind it has a top speed of 28mph, and don’t expect the rapid acceleration you might have become accustomed to in other electric cars.
