The seven best coupé cars in the UK
BMW 4 Series
If anyone does coupés well it’s the premium German brands, and the BMW 4 Series is a real eyecatcher.
It’s obviously a looker, with that big kidney grille at the front and bags of BMW aggression, but’s also a lot of fun on the road.
At the absolute top-end, and probably the most exciting pick, the M440i offers a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo engine that offers 374hp.
Mercedes CLE
Another German powerhouse, the Mercedes CLE is also of the best coupé cars on the market – though it’s often overlooked.
We’d recommend the CLE for its flashy interior that comes from the classy C-Class Saloon. There’s a chunky 12.3-inch digital instrument display and 11.9-inch touchscreen pairing, and it all feels top-quality.
It’s bigger than the 4 Series and gets slightly more power – with the range-topper here being the CLE 450 with a 3.0-litre 381hp engine.
Audi A7 Sportback
To complete the trilogy of premium German picks, we’re recommending the Audi A7 Sportback as one of the best coupé cars.
It’s an elegant looking machine and is sort of shark-like in shape. It moves like one as well, easily splashing out 360hp from the plug-in hybrid 55 TFSI e model.
That hybrid tech gives you impressive fuel efficiency too. The official fuel consumption figure puts it at about 141mpg, but that’s the best-case scenario, so take it with a pinch of salt.
BMW 2 Series Coupé
We’re offering you the BMW 2 Series Coupé as an option for the best coupé car as it’s a more compact version of its 4 Series older sibling.
This is the one to pick if you want space and performance without choosing an SUV or something that’s super-spenny to run.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, road-tested the 2 Series Coupé and said: “It’s simple, the BMW 2 Series Coupé does pretty much what every coupé buyer is after.
“The turbocharged 3.0-litre M235i and later M240i models is something to behold because the sheer pace would give many sports car owners plenty to worry about.”
Ford Mustang
A Ford Mustang might feel a bit of an out-of-pocket pick for a 'best coupé' list – it's not one of the classic options – but this piece of American muscle is right at home on this list.
The engine is really something to shout about, as there’s a 5.0-litre V8 on offer that might just knock your head off with its 450hp.
Inside is a lot of fun as well. There's a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.2-inch infotainment display duo, but the lack of physical controls might disappoint old-school Mustang fans a little.
Jaguar F-Type
If you like the Mustang but want something a bit more elegant, or more British, the Jaguar F-Type is another incredible coupé that offers massive amounts of power.
In fact, it matches the Mustang with two 5.0-litre V8 engines but also adds a 2.0-litre entry-level model.
These offer 450hp and 300hp, respectively, and are undoubtedly fun to drive. In our review, Sam said: “Jaguar designed the F-Type as a car that gives a perfect driving experience.
“The handling is sharp, the performance is exhilarating and even the suspension is a little more forgiving than you might expect.”
It's basically an Aston Martin but without the hefty price tag.
Toyota GT86
We won’t hear a bad word said about the Toyota GT86, and we truly believe it's one of the best coupés out there – though often overlooked.
It’s a sporty coupé that feels a bit more stripped back than some of its rivals, though we’d argue that’s part of its charm.
All iterations are based on the same 2.0-litre engine, and the peppiest will get you 200hp. But this car is not about pure power – it's about finely-tuned handling.
The whole car is more than easy on the eye and the interior is comfortable with – get this – actual knobs and buttons to complement the touchscreen. Old-school fans rejoice.
