Jaguar XE SV Project 8
What does this car and hen’s teeth have in common? They’re both as rare as you like.
Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) department only ever made a quoted 300 XE Project 8s, so seeing one on the road is very unlikely, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream about them.
Power comes from a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine that puts out 592hp and 700Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful road-going Jags ever made.
The XE-based saloon could be ordered in two different specifications: Touring (with rear seats and no wing) and Track Pack (no rear seats, rear wing and a roll cage). We’d always say the former is the better choice, that is, if you don’t have any friends.
Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid
You may know Porsche for its 911 sports car, but one car that often flies under the radar is the Panamera, but more specifically, the brutish top-spec Turbo S E-Hybrid.
This 770hp supercar destroyer packs a serious punch in all areas. Not only is it fast, it’s also practical with a 421-litre boot, reliable, genuinely impressive to drive and understated.
But what about the latter part of its name? Well, that denotes it’s a plug-in hybrid capable of driving on electric power only for up to 53 miles.
BMW M5
If you’re going to buy a fast BMW, you may as well make it the full-fat M5 for a few reasons.
Firstly, it’s blisteringly quick with up to 727hp and a 0-62mph time of just 3.5 seconds, thanks to its 4.4-litre V8 engine.
Secondly, it’s practical with enough space for all the family and even the dog if you go for a Touring version.
And thirdly, it seriously looks the part. Whenever you park up, you’re going to have to turn around and have a look as you walk away.
Škoda Octavia vRS
The Škoda Octavia, in its most basic form, is one of the most sensible cars you could buy, so why not spread your wings a little bit and try the top-spec vRS model?
This gets you the same practical seating and huge 600-litre boot but with 265hp to play with.
In many ways, this hatchback resembles a saloon in terms of its shape, but due to the way the boot opens, it is – meaning rivals include the Golf GTI and Focus ST.
Audi RS e-tron GT
Talk about sports cars, the Audi RS e-tron GT is one of the quickest cars you can buy today.
Because it’s electric, it has instantaneous torque from its electric motors, giving you 925hp and 1,027Nm of torque all at once, resulting in a 0-62mph time of as little as 2.5 seconds with the optional Performance Pack.
But it’s not just the way it accelerates, it’s also the way it corners, thanks to a clever suspension system with lots of computers making micro changes as you drive – it’s seriously impressive.
Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
If the e-tron is the fast one, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is the playful one, helping it become one of the cheekier cars out there.
Rear-wheel drive and a 520hp 2.9-litre V6 engine are sometimes all you need, and with four doors, this Alfa can truly be your one car for everything.
Following an extensive test, Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, concluded that this Italian saloon is the one to have over a Mercedes C63 AMG or BMW M3 if you want to have some proper fun and feel connected to the car.
Mercedes-AMG CLA 45
Let’s be honest, if you’re buying a CLA 45 AMG, the chances are it’s a heart purchase over one made by your head, otherwise you’d have stuck with the standard model.
And yes, there isn’t as much space in the rear seats because of the sloped roof design, and no, it’s not as fast as some of its rivals, but what it does have is a point-and-shoot mentality usually reserved for electric cars.
Thanks to all-wheel drive and 421hp, you can get where you’re going quickly and safely (within the speed limit). It gives you so much confidence, and is proof you don’t need to spend even more mega bucks on a Mercedes supercar.
Honda Civic Type R
Hot hatches are the backbone of this country. With our tight and narrow roads, rougher road surfaces and high fuel prices, it’s no wonder us motorists look towards the humble hatchback, but the Type R isn’t your run-of-the-mill city car.
Instead, it’s a maniac with wheels, producing 329hp from its plucky 2.0-litre engine mated to one of the finest manual gearboxes of our generation.
What’s more, it has four usable seats and a 410-litre boot – just like the standard Civic. Tempted? Because we are.
