Finding the best four-seater convertible can be a tricky task, with so many different brands making some seriously compelling options.
Being limited to just two seats makes top-down driving less social, but add a couple more in the back, and you can bring more people along for the ride.
What’s the best four-seater convertible car?
Mercedes CLE Cabriolet
BMW 4 Series Convertible
MINI Cooper Convertible
VW T-Roc Cabriolet
Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS
Bentley Continental GT Convertible
Audi A5 Cabriolet
Fiat 500C
Range Rover Evoque Convertible
Ford Mustang Convertible
The best four-seat convertibles in the UK
Mercedes CLE Cabriolet
For long-distance driving, the Mercedes CLE Cabriolet is a stellar choice, offering incredible levels of comfort and refinement.
As with most four-seater convertibles, the CLE’s rear-seat space is somewhat limited, but adults will be fine in the back on shorter journeys.
There are a few different variants on offer, with a selection of petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines available, alongside the top-spec AMG-tuned CLE53 which has a massive 448hp.
BMW 4 Series Convertible
The CLE’s main rival is the BMW 4 Series Convertible, which means it has a lot to live up to. But if you want a more dynamically capable car, this is the model for you.
Thanks to BMW’s sporty suspension setup and punchy engines, it’s an ideal choice for those who enjoy driving and feeling the wind in their hair.
It also has a soft-top roof, which is far less intrusive of boot and rear-seat space and puts it on a par with the Merc.
MINI Cooper Convertible
If you’re after a smaller four-seater convertible that’s nippy and fun to drive, then a MINI Cooper Convertible is one of the best options to consider.
Its interior is really plush, and newer models get MINI’s circular OLED display that’s crisp, colourful and adds a touch of luxe.
We’d always recommend the Cooper S if you’re a fan of driving, because the exhaust note and peppier engine make all the difference.
VW T-Roc Cabriolet
Family practicality and convertibles very rarely go hand in hand, but the VW T-Roc Cabriolet is an exception.
Based on the standard T-Roc SUV, the Cabriolet version still gets a decent 284-litre boot (even if it is 161 litres smaller than the hardtop). It also comes with plenty of rear-seat space and offers a different take on the family SUV.
While it may not offer the most dynamic driving experience of all the cars on this list, it does provide practicality for families.
Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS
Sitting at the very top of the four-seater convertible car tree is the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS. While it’s technically a semi-convertible, because it’s the mid-section that lifts off, we’re counting it.
Despite being the heaviest 911 on sale at 1,745kg, the Targa is still one of the most capable sports cars you can drive, thanks to its glorious sounding flat-six engine.
Space in the back is very limited but just knowing you’re in a Porsche makes that a little easier to cope with.
Bentley Continental GT Convertible
If you thought Mercedes made luxury convertibles, wait until you step foot in a Bentley Continental GT, filled with enough leather to make even the bravest cow quiver.
Rear space isn’t massive but being a Bentley, even adults won’t be too uncomfortable on longer drives.
Speaking of which, you won’t be short of torque and smooth sailing on a motorway journey, so you can waft along and wave down to all the peasants as you pass.
Audi A5 Cabriolet
The Audi A5 Cabriolet is the drop-top version of the popular A5 coupé, which means it shares its platform with the A4, and is therefore one of the most tried-and-tested cars you can buy.
Audi being Audi, the A5 Cabriolet is one of the more impressive convertibles out there. It’s somehow 40kg lighter than the previous generation and 40% stiffer too, thanks to some clever engineering and stronger materials.
This makes the driving experience second to none, and top-down driving in the A5 simply makes the world feel glorious.
Fiat 500C
The Fiat 500C is identical to the standard 500 in almost every single way, except for the roof, which partially slides back on the ‘C’ to create a semi-convertible.
Undeniably stylish in the south of France or on the Amalfi coast, it looks just at home here in the UK too, especially on a sunny summer’s day.
Because the roof doesn’t fully retract, it has the same rear-seat space as the regular 500 hatchback, which isn’t the biggest but fine for shorter journeys.
Range Rover Evoque Convertible
The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is truly unique, thanks to its high driving position, luxury interior, off-road capabilities and drop-top roof.
There’s the choice of either a petrol or diesel engine, and to ensure it’s as capable as the hardtop, it’s just as rigid for light off-roading. Though if you want a proper off-roader, we’d suggest a Wrangler.
Inside the Evoque is where the magic really happens, leaning on Land Rover’s luxury design and features to make you feel like royalty.
Ford Mustang Convertible
Picture this: you’re driving on the open road, wind in your hair and a V8 grumble behind you – is there a better way to spend the day?
Well, a Ford Mustang Convertible gives you just that. In the UK, there’s very little that rivals it, except some of the more expensive supercars, and even then, they’re not nearly as raw as a ‘stang.
Passengers in the back have next to no legroom, but children and adults on shorter journeys will love it.
