Medium SUVs and crossovers are a common sight on British roads, with more than 500,000 being registered each year, according to the SMMT.

With this trend expected to continue, we’ve put together a list showing 10 of the best medium SUVs you can buy on the used car market.

This way, not only can you save on the initial purchase cost, but when you come to sell it on, the first owner’s already taken the brunt of the depreciation. It’s a win-win situation.

Hyundai Tucson

Red Hyundai SUV driving on a rural road with greenery on the sides and a cloudy sky in the background.Kicking things off is the Hyundai Tucson – the business-savvy person’s choice.

We say this because it’s affordable, does everything a pricier SUV can do and is very fuel-efficient – all very welcome things.

This Hyundai SUV is also very practical for what’s considered to be ‘mid-sized’ in the UK. Its boot measures 558 litres and increases to 1,799 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.

Some strong engine options include a petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The latter offers up to 33 miles of electric-only range and is therefore the best option for city dwellers.

Range Rover Evoque

Silver Range Rover Evoque driving on a wet road, with blurred trees and a cloudy sky in the background. If you appreciate the finer things in life, then the Range Rover Evoque is a great option for you.

Whether you live on the King’s Road in Chelsea or down a muddy trail in the Cotswolds, the Evoque will get you where you need to be.

With Land Rover’s exceptional off-road heritage, you’ll get a solid four-wheel-drive system that also allows for a comfortable ride on those longer motorway journeys.

There’s also a whole host of strong engines, from a sporty petrol to a longer-lasting efficient diesel. Newer iterations can even be had with a plug-in hybrid unit that offers up to 39 miles of electric-only driving.

Citroën C5 Aircross

Silver SUV driving on a rural road with blurred trees and a blue sky in the background. If there’s one thing the Citroen C5 Aircross did for the automotive industry, it was removing the ‘boring’.

The used Citroen C5 Aircross proves that crossover SUVs don’t have to be bland, from its characterful front grille to its quirky lower side panel ‘airbumps’ that help to cushion any bumps from other cars.

Engines include a petrol, plug-in hybrid and diesel engine, with the PHEV offering up to 34 miles of all-electric range.

Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, says: "The C5 is proof that all crossovers don’t need to look the same and that there’s room for an alternative to the German makes."

Nissan Qashqai

Blue Nissan Qashqai E-Power driving on a road, awarded "Car of the Year 2024" by cinch.Despite being a Japanese car, the Nissan Qashqai is actually built in Sunderland, which might be why you see so many on the roads.

When you get behind the Nissan's wheel, you’ll notice a smooth ride, plenty of the latest technology, comfortable seats and lots of space for the family – including ISOFIX points for the little ones.

There are some great engines too, including a petrol, diesel and hybrid engine, with the diesel being the best if you regularly drive long distances.

"It feels like an electric car with zippy acceleration and one-pedal driving, and yet it's as convenient as a petrol car because it doesn't need to be plugged in", says Sam.

BMW X3

Red SUV driving on a rural road with a blurred landscape of grass and trees in the background. The BMW X3 is one of those cars you see everywhere, from the school gates to driving along the motorway.

It can be had with a petrol or diesel engine, or a plug-in hybrid engine that offers up to 34 miles of electric power alone.

There’s also an all-electric version called the iX3 that offers a claimed range of 285 miles on a single charge, making it ideal for those in a city.

A used BMW X3 is also very practical, with a boot measuring 550 litres and growing to a whopping 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Lexus NX

A red Lexus SUV parked on a street beside a brick building, with sunlight casting shadows on the wall. The NX is an important car to Lexus for two reasons.

Firstly, this was the first-ever plug-in hybrid car it made, and secondly, it’s one of its best sellers here in the UK. So, if there’s ever a Lexus to consider, it’s this one.

However, if a PHEV isn’t for you, the NX also comes as a self-charging hybrid, which means you never need to plug it in to charge, but you lose out on the extended electric range.

Another reason this makes for a great medium SUV is its boot space, which measures 525 litres – plenty for a large shopping trip or baby accessories.

Kia Sportage

White SUV driving on a scenic rural road with green fields and a blue sky with clouds in the background. The Kia Sportage, like the Tucson, is an affordable way to enter the world of high-end SUVs because it’s so much cheaper than its rivals, yet still offers everything you could ever want.

Because it’s a Kia – a brand that offers a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty – the Sportage is incredibly durable and well put-together.

It’s a great all-round family vehicle too, with plenty of cubbyholes, a solid infotainment system and a large 591-litre boot.

Jaguar F-PACE

Red SUV driving on a scenic mountain road with lush green hills and trees in the background under a clear sky.The luxury SUV segment is ever-growing, but one car that’s remained a constant for many years is the Jaguar F-PACE.

This handsome mid-sized SUV sits above the E-PACE and is on the same level as the all-electric I-Pace in terms of comfort and luxury.

You can have it with the standard petrol or diesel engines, but there’s also a PHEV with 40 miles of range and the monstrous 5.0-litre V8 SVR that sits at the top of the range.

Škoda Enyaq iV

Blue SUV driving on a sandy beach with the ocean in the background under a clear sky.Cars such as the Skoda Enyaq iV prove that great electric mid-sized SUVs do exist.

With a claimed range of up to 339 miles and a power output of 265hp, this is more like a sporty EV than anything else, but it’s also hugely practical.

The lack of a transmission tunnel running along the car’s floor means there’s more room in the rear for three passengers, and the boot measures 585 litres (growing to 1,710 litres with the rear seats folded), which is plenty for families.

Ford Kuga

A red SUV parked on a sunlit street, with modern architecture in the background. If you’re a Ford Focus fan but want to sit higher up on the road, then the Ford Kuga is the one for you.

What we like about the Kuga is that it’s not too flashy or over the top. Instead, it’s humble and does the job perfectly, as is common with used Ford models.

Engine options include a petrol, diesel and PHEV, which offers a claimed electric range of up to 41 miles.
