For fans of compact SUVs, look no further than a used Mercedes-Benz GLA. It’s similar in size to the much-loved A-Class hatchback, but with a higher driving position.

From the classy leather interiors and the modern technology at your fingertips to LED headlights lighting your way, the GLA has it all and is one of the best Mercedes SUV picks.

Sam Sheehan, motoring expert, said in his review of the GLA: "It does a great job of blending the chic looks of the A-Class hatchback with the purposeful SUV style buyers are after."

Mercedes-Benz GLB

Naturally, the Mercedes-Benz GLB is slightly bigger than the GLA, but still offers the all-important versatility of a compact SUV.

The GLB has a more squared look than other SUVs the brand offers, but this is built with purpose and helps Mercedes maximise interior space.

The back is designed to perfectly fit your suitcases without hassle, with a good-sized boot and the option of five or seven seats.

  • Fuel types: petrol and diesel

  • Boot space: 500-570 litres (1805 litres with the rear seats folded)

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz GLC

Mercedes GLC front

The Mercedes-Benz GLC comes in two flavours: a traditional SUV and an SUV coupé crossover. That means you get the choice of ultra-practicality or plenty of space in a smoother shape.

All of the petrol and diesel engines send power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, and they pack plenty of power even when the family and their luggage is onboard.

Sam says: "If you want something that’s going to glide over poor road surfaces and not get upset by potholes, the GLC is the SUV for you."

It's ideal to buy a used Mercedes GLC model as well, as these still get all the features and high-quality interiors but at a lower price.

  • Fuel types: petrol and diesel

  • Boot space (SUV): 620 litres

  • Boot space (coupé): 545 litres

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2022)

Mercedes-Benz GLS

Like its siblings, the Mercedes GLS is an SUV take on a classic. This time, it’s the luxurious S-Class.

The GLS is the largest of the brand’s SUVs, with seven seats that are genuinely useful and comfortable, even for long journeys.

It has a real premium ride, with plenty of tech as standard. Stand-out features from the range include the 64-colour ambient lighting system, a star pattern light carpet, and heated massage seats.

  • Fuel type: petrol and diesel

  • Boot space: 470 litres (890 litres with third row seats folded, 1,470 litres with all rear seats folded)

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

SUVs don’t get more iconic than the boxy G-Class.

It has all the off-road credentials you could ever need, but it’s equally at home (and more often found) on the streets of Kensington. The latest model has a spread of two massive 12.3-inch infotainment and driver display screens that span the entire dashboard.

The G-Class has a timeless all-terrain vehicle appearance to rival the Land Rover Defender – built like a tank but with the elegance of a yacht.

These models can be quite pricey, so choosing a used G-Class is an ideal way to cut back costs.

  • Fuel types: petrol, diesel, electric

  • Boot space: 667 litres (1,246 litres with the seats folded) or 555 litres in the electric model

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz EQA

We’re moving into the electric SUVs now, and the EQA is a great starting point. It’s a compact car in the lineup and is effectively an electrified GLA.

There are two 10-inch screens for infotainment and driver information on the dash, with the impressive MBUX system built in. You can navigate the features via touch, gesture or voice.

It can be as interactive as telling the car ‘I’m too hot’ and having it intuitively turn on the air conditioning.

  • Electric range: 346 miles (250+ model)

  • Boot space: 500 litres (1,060 with the rear seats folded)

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz EQB

If you like the sound of an electric Mercedes SUV but need more space, the EQB is a seven-seater option based on the GLB.

We’d recommend looking at models from the 2023 facelift onwards to get the most tech as standard.

The Premium model is a great starting point, offering adaptive LED headlights, electric sliding doors and a heated steering wheel.

There’s also the impressive 12.3-inch twin screen set-up, so the interior looks delightfully modern.

  • Electric range: up to 321 miles

  • Boot space: up to 495 litres, 1,320 litres with the seats folded

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz EQC

If you’re sensing a theme here, you’d be correct – the Mercedes EQC is the electric alternative to the GLC.

Though it’s a smaller five-seater when compared to its siblings, and Sam says it’s ‘roomy, comfy and a brilliant drive’.

He goes on to say: “While it’s not a sports car, it accelerates impressively for a vehicle of its size and weight.

“The various advanced driver assistance systems available allow you to relax and let the car do the acceleration, braking and steering for you.”

  • Electric range: up to 259 miles

  • Boot space: 500 litres, extending to 1,060 litres with the seats down

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV

An alternative to the GLE, the Mercedes EQE SUV is cracking option. It’s actually one of two options – there’s both an SUV and a saloon variant.

They’ll both get you through short commutes and school runs, as well as any longer trips you need to make, but the SUV adds that extra layer of comfort and presence. And it’s bang on trend.

It particularly shines on the inside, with the MBUX ‘Hyperscreen’ settled in across the dash. It’s made up of three displays under a single glass panel to create a high-resolution control centre that dominates the cabin.

  • Electric range: 378 miles

  • Boot space: 430 litres, or 895 litres with the rear seats folded

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2022)

Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

A white Mercedes EQS SUV driving on a highway with a grassy landscape and a tree in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

You know the deal by now. The Mercedes EQS SUV is the electric variation of the GLS, although confusingly, it’s also available as a saloon, which is a bit like the S-Class.

If you want a big premium SUV that’s powered by electricity, this is your pick.

It’s a luxurious, spacious seven-seater with healthy range that can charge from 10-80% in just 31 minutes with a fast charger.

Oh, and just some of features on offer include a panoramic sliding sunroof, privacy glass and soft-closing doors.

Tech-wise you get a huge MBUX Hyperscreen that was the brand’s biggest ever in-car screen at the time it launched.

  • Electric range: 400 miles

  • Boot space: 610 litres, or 1,770 litres with the rear seats folded

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2021)

Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class

A blue Mercedes G-Class with EQ Technology drives on a winding rural road, surrounded by hills and cloudy skies.

The Mercedes G-Class, better known as the flashy ‘G-Wagen’ is one of the brand’s most iconic SUVs. In fact, it might be one of the most iconic SUVs of all time.

Influencers, rappers and pilates mums alike have claimed the G-Class as the car of choice. Its utilitarian shape is eye-catching and feels more rugged than Range Rover alternatives.

There’s now the G-Class Electric car, that’s just as luxurious, comfortable and flashy as the OG.

  • Electric range: up to 294 miles

  • Boot space: up to 667 litres, or 2,000 litres with the rear seats folded

  • Euro NCAP rating: five stars (2019)

What makes a good Mercedes SUV?

The best Mercedes SUV is the one that suits your needs - what is it that you want from your car?

If you have a big family and need space, choose a seven-seater like the GLB/EQB or GLS/EQS SUV.

Or if you need something a bit smaller but still want the SUV presence, the GLA and EQA will serve you well.

Mercedes’ sprawling SUV range means you can make a list and use our filters to find your Goldilocks model. It’s simple really.

What’s the smallest Mercedes SUV?

The smallest Mercedes SUV is the GLA model, which essentially boosts the classic A-Class hatchback onto an SUV platform.

This is the one to pick if you love the SUV trend but don't need extra space - although it's still comfortably roomy.

And electric fans can choose the EQA, which is based largely on the GLA.

What’s the square Mercedes SUV called?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is probably the model you're thinking of when you describe it as 'square'.

Also known as the ‘G-Wagen’, this is a truly iconic car, thanks in part to its unique boxy shape.
