Dacia Jogger
Dacia is known for selling wallet-friendly cars, but you might not associate it with a practical seven-seater like the Jogger.
It benefits from chunky SUV-like styling, but has a silhouette more similar to an estate, making it relatively easy to move in tighter spaces - unlike most other seven-seaters, which are typically large SUVs these days.
Power comes from a 110hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, which Dacia says will do 48mpg, but if you're regularly carrying a couple of adults, you might want the punchier 140hp self-charging hybrid, which'll do around 57mpg.
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer
This is where posh meets practicality, because the 2 Series Active Tourer has a premium cabin and a lot of badge appeal despite being packaged as a family-friendly people carrier.
When BMW renewed this MPV for a second-generation, it concentrated on the five-seat version, but if you're willing to look at slightly older models, you can pick up previous-generation seven-seaters, called the 2 Series Gran Tourer.
In the case of this second-generation Active Tourer model, efficiency is the name of the game, with a choice of mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains boasting up to 57 miles of electric-only motoring.
Volkswagen Multivan
As the name suggests, the VW Multivan is a van-based people carrier that offers the type of extensive cabin versatility that you'd never get in a car-based model, so if carrying adults in comfort is high on your priority list, give this VW a go.
Don't be put off by its shape, though, because inside it feels as much a car as any other VW. It uses high-quality materials for a premium finish, but without shouting about it.
A modern alternative to the Transporter, our pick would be an eHybrid plug-in hybrid model for quiet, city-friendly motoring.
Volkswagen ID. Buzz
If the Multivan is today's Transporter, the ID. Buzz is today's VW camper – yes, the classic, hippy-era bus. It has a truly nostalgic and iconic design, but feels very much 21st-century.
Because it's built on VW's electric car platform, it's packaged really well in terms of the battery and running gear's placement, which translated to a cavernous interior.
Take your pick from five- or seven-seat versions (or the Cargo model, which has an open cargo space, perfect for a mattress and a night under the stars) – or even a performance GTX edition with the reassuring grip of four-wheel drive.
Ford S-Max
Ford no longer makes the S-Max, but that won't stop us from recommending it. As with smaller Fords, the S-Max has a truly sporty feel, handling much better than you'd think for a fairly big seven-seater.
It has understated good looks that don't scream parental taxi – you'd be proud to drive one even if it's just you, and in ST-Line trim, we think it looks smashing.
It went off sale before hybrid and electric cars seriously became mainstream, so we'd recommend one of the diesels for the best fuel economy. In its later years on sale, the 2.5-litre self-charging hybrid from the Kuga got shoehorned into it.
Mercedes B-Class
The perfect blend of premium and practicality, the Mercedes B-Class shares many of its mechanical parts with the extremely popular A-Class, but packaged into a more upright stance.
It's a comparably compact MPV with just the five seats, but that makes it easy to drive and park around town.
Newer models have mild hybrid assistance to improve fuel economy, but we think the B250e plug-in hybrid should be high on any B-Class shopper's list.
Mercedes EQV
Designed as an electric alternative to the V-Class – a premium van-based MPV you'll often see in cities being used as a luxury taxi – the EQV instantly impresses with its much quieter ride, because it's electric, of course.
As you'd expect, it has a swanky interior with plenty of leather, screens, ambient lighting... the lot.
It's not cheap, but it certainly feels like a first-class lounge on wheels. Even better, you can save thousands by opting for a used EQV.
Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer
Citroën has built itself a name as one of the go-to makers of people carriers, and the Grand C4 SpaceTourer is up there with the best.
Being a Citroën, you can expect a very soft ride and extremely comfortable seats, which is ideal for ferrying the kids from one end of town to the other. The huge, cinema-like windscreen, which extends overhead, also helps improve visibility.
This car (and its five-seat C4 SpaceTourer sibling) was dropped when Citroën decided to focus on SUVs, which means prices have fallen, making it an affordable, easy-to-recommend MPV.

Whittling down the best MPVs isn't an easy job – even though many have morphed into chunky and rugged SUVs, there's still a place for conventional people carriers on our roads.
Whether you're after a bargain, maximum practicality or an extremely refined ride, there's a used MPV for every buyer in the market.
