Range Rovers are incredibly desirable SUVs that blend together Land Rover’s expertise in creating genuinely capable off-roaders with true luxury.

Though part of Land Rover, Range Rovers are often regarded as their own models and there’s now a choice of four to pick from, ranging from a compact family SUV all the way up to a large, executive SUV.

With so many to choose from, you may be wondering what distinguishes them. Below, we outline some key selling points to help you in your quest for your ideal Range Rover.

What is the best Range Rover?

  • Range Rover Evoque

  • Range Rover Velar

  • Range Rover Sport

  • Range Rover

Is the Evoque the best Range Rover model?

It might be the baby of the bunch, but don't let the Range Rover Evoque's compact frame fool you – it gets the same off-road tech, including Land Rover's mighty Terrain Response 2 system, as its bigger siblings.

Built on the same platform as the sporty Jaguar E-Pace, you'll very often see the glamorous Evoque cruising around town. All but the entry-level models come with all-wheel drive, and most models come equipped with a 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engine.

If you have access to a home charger, consider the 300hp 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid, but don't worry too much about trim levels because most versions get things like leather upholstery, keyless entry and a dual-screen setup.

Is a Velar the best Range Rover to buy used?

Slotting neatly between the Evoque and Sport, the Range Rover Velar is a stylish, coupé-like take on the classic Range Rover design. Like its siblings, it's still no poser when the going gets muddy, with the Terrain Response 2 system quickly springing into action.

It makes for a great family SUV, with more affordable pricing compared with the Range Rover Sport and a selection of 2.0- and 3.0-litre engines.

Standard equipment is strong, with earlier models boasting a swanky three-screen setup and newer versions coming with a cleaner two-screen array and Land Rover's much-improved Pivi Pro infotainment system – certainly worth upgrading to if you can afford it.

Which Range Rover is best: is it the Sport?

A dark grey Range Rover Sport drives on a rural road with vast fields and distant mountains under a clear blue sky.

The Range Rover Sport is an extremely popular SUV for drivers who want to make a statement. It's pretty much as capable as the best Land Rovers, but is just as capable taking on sportier models like the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5.

Engine choices are befitting of this large SUV, with V6 diesels proving extremely popular. If you fancy a bit more poke, consider the mighty V8s (petrol or diesel), or if you want to slash your running costs, there's also the plug-in hybrid option.

Second-generation models sold from 2013 to 2022 are widely available on the used market, but if you want the last word in luxury, consider the 2022-on third-generation model. It's ultra-minimalist, highly refined and a great off-roader.

Range Rover: is this the largest model?

A maroon Range Rover drives on a rural road at sunset, with fields and distant hills in the background.

This model is where the family gets its name from, but the modern Range Rover is a far cry from earlier models, which were primarily built as off-road machines. Sure, newer cars are still among the best 4x4s out there, but they're now luxurious enough to take on chauffeur cars like the Mercedes S-Class too.

Take your pick from V6 and V8 engines across most generations, but if you want the best plug-in hybrid technology, consider the latest generation which can do over 70 miles of electric motoring on a single charge. That's unless you fancy Land Rover's first fully electric model, the 300-mile Range Rover Electric.

Because this is the flagship model, high-end versions come with all manner of luxuries, from soft-closing doors to a digital rear-view mirror. Forget powered boot lids, because they're standard across the range – we're talking a powered parcel shelf here.

There's no such thing as the best Range Rover, because every driver will want something different from their luxury SUV. Instead, consider the size you're comfortable with and how much you're willing to pay.

That's because standard equipment is strong across the board, power is effortless and virtually all models come with four-wheel drive and the Terrain Response 2 system.
