Choosing a two-seater sports car is a methodical move that keeps you off the list for potential lifts, and means you’ll have a lot of fun on the roads.

BMW Z4
The BMW Z4 is one of the best two-seater sports cars for anyone that likes a posh and sleek motor.
It’s more compact than other BMW convertibles like the 3 Series and 4 Series , but still feels every bit the aggressive Bimmer.
You can just about justify this as a practical option because it offers a 281-litre boot that isn’t affected by the folding roof.
Even the entry-level sDrive20i model brings a 2.0-litre engine with 197hp, but there’s also a spicy 3.0-litre M40i that pushes it to 340hp.
Mazda MX-5
There are a few cars that will likely come to mind when you think of the best two-seaters, but the Mazda MX-5 is likely to be one of the first.
Known as the ‘Miata’ in the US, it’s an iconic car that has kept a loyal following through generations – starting with the loveable NA model that launched in 1989 with its pop-up headlights.
Nowadays, you can find all variants of MX-5 on the used market in great shape. The newest looks closer to the curvy Z4, and there’s a choice of 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engines to pick from.
Mercedes SLC
Another compact roadster from a premium brand is the Mercedes SLC if you’re in the market for one of the best two-seater sports cars.
It’s a close rival to the MX-5 and BMW Z4, though you might prefer the SLC if you’re here for plush, luxurious driving because that’s what Mercedes does best.
Engines are similar to the Z4, starting with a 181hp 2.0-litre, and topping off with a hefty 3.0-litre V6 that produces 362hp.
The only downside is that it feels more sensible on the road and not as peppy as models like the MX-5. This makes it perfect for those after something easy on the eye and comfortable to waft around in.
Porsche 718 Boxster
There aren't many things in life that feel as fancy as driving a Porsche, and the iconic Porsche 718 Boxster is a proper treat.
It’s undeniably a good-looking car, with that timeless Porsche styling that’s smooth yet with a sporty edge.
The real treat can be found behind the seats. Powering it is either a 2.0-litre 300hp or 2.5-litre 350hp engine in the Boxster S – both are flat-four engines.
Opt for the Boxster GTS if you want one of the best two-seater sports cars with some extra engine spice. This gets 400hp from a naturally aspirated flat-six 4.0-litre engine that screams on the limit.
Toyota GT86
The Toyota GT86 will likely appeal to the same audience as the MX-5 – it’s for those that find the luxury German models a bit samey.
Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, rated the GT86 an impressive four out of five stars. He said: “There are few finer coupes than the Toyota GT86.
“It’s precisely the fact that it isn’t terribly quick and tenaciously grippy that makes it so much more fun and usable.”
If you like a Subaru, the 2.0-litre engine in the GT86 will feel familiar as it’s the exact same unit from the BRZ. That screams ‘reliability’ to us.
Jaguar F-TYPE
Jaguars probably sit in the same league as Porsches for desirability. They're elegant, handsome and luxurious to drive.
There’s a selection of engines to choose from with the F-Type, but the V6 or V8 set-ups are the ones that’ll get your heart racing. The V6 puts out 368hp, while the V8 jumps up to 567hp.
Jaguar states the interior was built with a driver focus, claiming you can create a ‘bond’ within the car thanks to its maximum visibility, minimal distractions and seating that prioritises a strong centre of gravity.
Lotus Emira
If you want something really fancy, the Lotus Emira is a high-end sports car that sits on the smaller side.
It looks every bit the luxury car on the inside, with two hugging seats that hold you in place when it’s time to enjoy the power.
If you are interested in power (and you probably are if you’re looking for the best two-seater sports cars) there’s a 2.0-litre turbo that’ll get you 360hp, or a supercharged 3.5-litre V6 with 400hp.
MG Cyberster
How about one of the best electric two-seater sports cars? While electric SUVs and city cars have been gaining popularity, there are a few zippy sports cars with battery reliance that deserve our attention.
As an electric car, you can get up to 316 miles on a single charge. Though, if you’re taking advantage of the 3.2-second 0-62mph time, you’re unlikely to cover quite that many miles.
The comfortable interior and eye-catching design still make it a dreamy car for a casual drive, even if you’re not thrashing the top speeds (on a track day only, please...).
