Vauxhall Corsa Electric
Still the UK's go-to for faff-free motoring, and a firm favourite among driving schools, learner drivers and retired drivers alike for its compact dimensions and light controls, the Vauxhall Corsa Electric comes with a choice of two batteries and two motors for over 200 miles of real-world range.
It won't blow your socks off, but it's a truly affordable supermini that ticks all the boxes. If you need more range, consider the mightily impressive 1.2-litre mild hybrid petrol, which can do a lot of town driving with the engine switched off – it's an exceptional example of affordable electrification, and even better, you can get it in most other Vauxhalls too.
Vauxhall Astra Hybrid
It might be the de facto hatchback that your uncle probably drove when you were growing up, but the latest model is a totally different car to Astras of old, with a new minimalist interior and improved comfort.
It's available with electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, but the cheapest could just be the best. The mild hybrid will easily return over 50mpg with mixed driving, and it's punchy enough to keep up with motorway traffic when you want to take it further afield.
Vauxhall Mokka Electric
With its bold styling and electric powertrain, the latest Mokka feels much more grown up than its awkward-looking predecessor, but don't be put off by its chunky SUV styling because it's still a pretty compact crossover, so it's great for towns and cities where you want to see that little bit more out of the windows.
Launched at the same time as the Corsa Electric, it was one of Vauxhall's first mainstream electric models, but plenty of updates have kept it feeling fresh over the years. Some standout features include the AGR-certified supportive seats, a new and bigger 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display and ChatGPT integration.
Vauxhall Frontera Electric
It seems that every other manufacturer is reviving old names in the electric era, but while some have been met with uncertainty and even dissatisfaction, the Frontera stays true to its roots as a genuinely useful crossover.
The Frontera isn't just a throwback, though – with a 460-litre boot, it has 150 litres more space than the similarly-sized Mokka, making it the one to go for if you're into your outdoor adventures or long road trips. It also previews a new, smaller 44kWh battery with a 186-mile range, with a starting price on par with its petrol counterpart. Talk about making EVs accessible.
Vauxhall Grandland Electric
Growing families with older children can quickly outgrow their crossovers, so if that sounds familiar, Vauxhall has the best car for you – it's the new Grandland, which has a totally new design compared with the previous Grandland X, including Vauxhall's new blacked-out grille which incorporates a light bar and an illuminated badge.
Being a bigger SUV, it has more space for a bigger battery, which means more range. Up to 435 miles from the 93kWh pack, to be precise. In fact, choice is endless, with a smaller and more affordable battery, a 325hp all-wheel drive model with a 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds and of course the 136hp 1.2-litre mild hybrid.
Vauxhall Insignia
The Insignia didn't quite make the cut when Vauxhall entered its latest era of electrification and new design, but it's still a hard car not to recommend, and best of all, it could just be one of the best looking saloons (or estates) out there.
The 1.5- and 2.0-litre diesels are perfect for long-distance motorway drives, where they could exceed 60mpg, but many drivers spend most of their time around town, so the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol could be a better option. Oh, and that saloon shape? Don't think too much into it – the Insignia actually has a hatchback boot, which means it opens nice and wide. A huge selling point over rivals like the Volkswagen Passat.
