The 1 Series and the 3 Series are undeniably BMW, even at first glance. Both offer the sharp and angular creases on otherwise smooth body panels, and a range of swooping rooflines to choose from.
You get that menacing kidney grille with each model, but the 1 Series is a more compact option, with a hatchback shape that looks more like an estate in places.
The 3 Series is longer, with a sleek and executive-feeling shape and sophisticated styling. If you’re after something that feels really grown-up, the 3 Series is the place to be.
That doesn’t make the 1 Series a child’s car, though. You’ll still get that chunky BMW feel but on a slightly smaller scale for urban driving, with a sportier look.

Like most BMW lines, both the 3 Series and 1 Series get an impressive number of power-train options.
Highlights include the hybrid 3 Series 330e in the 3 Series range, offering up to 292hp and as much as 201.8mph.
For top-level performance from a 3 Series, try the M340i xDrive on for size – you’ll get 374hp from a mighty 3.0-litre turbocharged engine.
In the 1 Series range, the M140i hot hatch is an exciting option that pushes out 340hp and can smash 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds.
Both models feel refined and comfortable on the road, whether you’re hurtling off the line (sensibly, please) or ambling around town.
You can choose from manual and automatic options with both models, so you won’t be struggling when it comes to choice.
BMW 3 Series vs. 1 Series: interior and technology

All BMW cars have a luxury feel inside, and the 1 Series and 3 Series uphold that reputation.
The interior on each is plush and premium, with options for extra touches as you move up the trims.
Both models support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the 1 Series has a smaller 8.8-inch display compared to the larger 12.3 inches that the 3 Series offers.
The 3 Series is roomier inside and the larger dash does leave room for more features, including a 10.25-inch control display. The 1 Series does have a 5.1-inch digital instrument display, so it's smaller, but you won’t be disappointed.
If you want a top-of-the-range model in each line, both the 1 Series and 3 Series are available with the premium-feeling M Sport trim. This adds touches like a sports steering wheel, ‘M’ decals, and sportier suspension.
These models stand up well against each other, but ultimately the 3 Series is roomier and offers larger screens and displays.
BMW 3 Series vs. 1 Series: bootspace and practicality

You’ll find that the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series models are most different when it comes to space – both are comfortable and roomy, but the 1 Series is the more compact choice.
With a 480-litre boot compared to the 380 litres offered by the 1 Series, the 3 Series boot space is better suited to anyone looking to lug around large loads.
The hybrid 330e, however, offers 400 litres after losing a fair bit of bootspace to make room for its battery-power tech.
If you really want to ramp up the space, the 3 Series Touring has a 500-litre boot, making it possibly the most practical option in the range.
While the 1 Series is smaller in comparison, that doesn’t make it a bad choice.
If you’re looking for a roomy hatchback that would still be comfortable for a small family, the 1 Series will serve you well.

Back in 2019, both the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series gained a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
The 1 Series received an 83% adult occupant rating and 87% for child, while the 3 Series performed slightly better with 97% and 87% ratings.
BMWs generally score well for reliability, but they can be slightly pricier to repair because of the quality of the parts and engineering.
With luxury car brands, the upkeep costs can be higher, so it’s a good idea to factor this into your running costs.

If you can’t choose between two of the most popular BMW models on the market, considering what you need from your car is the best way forward.
If you want something small but spacious that’s ideal for daily drives and is sportily styled, the BMW 1 Series could be a good fit for you.
If you’re not strictly on the market for a BMW, the Volkswagen Golf is also a great one to consider for these criteria.
The BMW 3 Series is the more ‘grown-up’ model, with its larger shape and range of powerful engines. There’s also the option of the 330e for hybrid power.
The 3 Series could make a great next step after starting with a 1 Series, or you might find a worthy alternative model in the Audi A4 or Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
