BMW 2 Series Coupé range

The BMW 2 Series Coupé is a suave and stylish car that’s comfortable enough for daily use but looks so good it still feels a treat.

It’s an ideal step up from the smaller 1 Series and offers more space, a sportier feel, and a really enjoyable drive.

You might find the 2 Series Coupé to be a worthy alternative to the Audi TT, while flashier 2 Series models might even rival the Porsche Cayman.

For a lower-budget option, the Volkswagen Scirocco could be the one.

There’s a range of engines in the BMW 2 Series range, including the powerful 3.0-litre M235i and M240i models, and options for a plug-in hybrid if you want something more efficient.

Plus, there are loads of impressive used BMW options on the market if you want to save on costs.

BMW 2 Series Coupé models explained

The BMW 2 Series Coupé is a great option for many motorists, but it might not be the perfect fit for everyone.

A BMW 2 Series Coupé might be the one for you if:

  • You can get along fine without rear doors, and the Coupé body shape is practical for you

  • The tech and premium feel that comes with the BMW badge is important to you, and lower budget options won't do

  • You’re a fan of the nippy engine options, or can be tempted by a plug-in hybrid

You might want to consider alternatives to the BMW 2 Series if:

SE

The BMW 2 Series SE model is a great introductory model with some impressive tech and features. Models get 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, and a sat-nav system that uses the classic BMW rotary knob.

You can only grab these models on the used market these days, so you should be able to find a bargain.

Sport

The BMW 2 Series Sport models get some extra touches that are just as the name suggests. Sports seats, chunkier alloys, and stylish black trim pair well with the addition of driver mode settings.

You can switch between Eco, Comfort and Sport mode in this model – and each option nails what it sets out to do.

M Sport

The BMW 2 Series M Sport model is a favourite among the range and turns up that sporty styling with a menacing body kit.

You'll also enjoy the M Sport suspension for a firmer drive, plus variable sport steering and ambient lighting to set the mood.

M235i/M240i

The 2 Series M235i and M240i models are all about performance, sitting lower and offering a turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

Depending on the model, these get 19-inch alloys and a range of unique paint colours, plus a slick eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Best BMW 2 Series Coupé engines

There are a few engines to choose from in the BMW 2 Series Coupé range, including the entry-level 1.5-litre petrol option that’s still an exciting drive. It feels quintessentially BMW – smooth and nippy when needed.

The 318d model is ideal if you want the look of the 2 Series but with lower running costs. You can expect an average fuel economy figure of around 60mpg, while the 28i petrol model offers around 52mpg.

If performance is what you’re after, you’ll have to choose between the M235i and M240i models. The M240i offers a blistering 382hp, with the M235i pushing out an equally impressive 321hp.

We have to mention the M2 as well, although it might be slightly overpowering for daily use. This model can offer up to 450hp and feels seriously sporty behind the wheel.

No matter the engine you choose, all feel great on the road and have their own selling points. Even if you go for the economical diesel, you know you’ll still enjoy your daily drives.

BMW 2 Series plug-in hybrid

The BMW 2 Series range now includes a plug-in hybrid model, but you’ll have to choose an Active Tourer over the Coupé to try it out.

A BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Plug-in Hybrid can offer up to 326hp, so it’s still powerful and on par with typical BMW standards.

You’ll get up to 57 miles of purely electric range, too. This makes it a great option for saving money on shorter drives or taking the edge off long road trips.

The best BMW 2 Series Coupé models

The BMW 2 Series Coupé lineup is an expansive one with impressive models that will suit different motorists.

Take a look at our top picks:

The best BMW 2 Series for performance

Many people come looking for a BMW 2 Series to experience power, and the M240i is great for this. The 3.0-litre turbocharged set-up is punchy and powerful and will leap off the line quicker than other models in the range without breaking a sweat.

The best BMW 2 Series for value

The BMW 2 Series 318d model is a great option for saving money on running costs while still enjoying the prestige of a BMW. You'll get all the gorgeous styling and impressive features, but you won't be shedding a tear at the pump anytime soon.

The best BMW 2 Series for tech

The BMW 2 Series offers a great range of tech in all its models, including the brilliant iDrive System on a 10.3-inch touchscreen, built-in sat-nav, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The M Sport is the top trim and will offer all the features and tech you could need.

The best BMW 2 Series for space

While the BMW 2 Series Coupé is spacious and comfortable, you might find the Gran Coupé the better option if you want more space. The rear doors are easier if you know you’ll be using the back seats a lot, and you’ll get a 430-litre boot.

BMW 2 Series models explained: Coupé, Tourer, and Convertible

There are a few body styles available in the BMW 2 Series range, besides the sleek Coupé. This means you can enjoy the luxury feel and impressive engines in a build that suits your preferences.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is the line’s MPV, so it’s got a chunkier and probably more practical shape. You can grab this as a plug-in hybrid or enjoy a spicy M Sport option for performance and styling.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is actually most similar to the BMW 1 Series, with saloon styling and lashings of comfort. It’s a great option for something slightly more spacious and offers rear doors.

Another exciting option in the range is the BMW 2 Series Convertible – a truly glamorous option that still has the sleek drive of your typical BMW. It might not be the best option for space, however, as the backseats are slightly more cramped.

Used BMW 2 Series reliability

The BMW 2 Series Coupé has been reviewed as a reliable car by its drivers, scoring well on consumer reliability surveys and getting usually above-average praise when compared to similar cars.

In 2022, the 2 Series Coupé also scored four out of five stars on the Euro NCAP safety test. Adult occupants received an 82% rating, while child occupants received 81%.

This means you’re getting a safe car that you can rely on, with plenty of safety tech to put your mind at ease.

Finance deals on used BMW 2 Series Coupé models

You can spread the cost of a BMW 2 Series Coupé with a finance deal, so you won’t have to pay the full price upfront.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) allows you to pay monthly payments towards your 2 Series, with an optional final payment to take ownership of the car. If you don’t want to keep the vehicle, you can skip the payment and hand it back.

You’ll need to keep an eye on the condition of your PCP finance car, as anything over the guidelines of fair wear and tear will mean you might have to pay damage charges.

Hire Purchase (HP) car finance is another option that splits the value of the car across monthly payments, with no final payment at the end.

Just like PCP, you won’t be the owner of the car until the full balance has been paid.
