Not sure whether to get the BMW iX or iX3? We compare both cars to see which is better for you

BMW iX vs. iX3 comparison

The BMW iX vs. iX3 face-off is one for the books. The German brand has mastered SUVs and done an impressive job of adding electric power into the mix.

Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) can feel a big move, but the familiarity of the BMW brand eases that transition.

The big question is which is your winner between these two seriously modern and luxurious SUVs.

We compare the two in our BMW iX vs. iX3 review to help you make that call.

Our guide will answer:

  • Which BMW SUV has the better styling?

  • Is the iX3 or iX better to drive?

  • Does the iX or iX3 have better tech?Is the iX3 or iX more reliable?

iX vs. iX3: styling

BMW iX vs. iX3 comparison of design

Trying to decide which BMW SUV is better looking is like trying to pick a favourite child – we love them all equally and we’re not cruel enough to favour just one.

The iX is everything you’d expect from a car of this calibre. It’s incredibly modern and has a strong road presence.

You’ll get something a bit more classic with the iX3. It’s more sophisticated and doesn’t feel as futuristic as the iX.

We’d say the iX3 will tempt those who want something handsome and posh, while the striking looks and boxy shape of the iX are for fans of the ultra-modern.

iX vs. iX3: what are they like to drive?

When it comes to iX vs. iX3 on speed, they aren’t worlds apart.

That might be surprising when you consider the iX3 M Sport offers 282hp and the iX xDrive 40 has 322hp, but the weight of the iX does slow it down a touch.

That, by no means, makes either of these cars boring to drive. They’re fast and smooth, with nimble handling and a comfortable ride.

Where range is concerned, the iX xDrive 50 M Sport gets up to 382 miles on a full charge. The iX3 M Sport claims 285 miles, so you’re the iX does seem more efficient.

iX vs. iX3: interior and technology

BMW iX vs. iX3 comparison of interior

If there’s one thing that EVs tend to do well, it’s technology.

The iX3 gets the more traditional set-up of the X3, with a pair of 12.3-inch infotainment screens and the classic iDrive click-wheel.

BMW brings its most high-tech interior to the iX, with a massive, curved touchscreen that spans the entire dash for infotainment and car info.

Both cars have the superb quality you’d expect from BMW, but the iX does slightly take the edge. It’s extra-premium and has nice eco-friendly touches like floor mats made from recycled fishing nets.

iX vs. iX3: boots pace and practicality

Boot space across both SUVs is similar, with the iX offering 500 litres and the iX3 topping that only slightly with 510 litres of space.

Neither models get a ‘frunk’ (front trunk – an extra boot space under the bonnet) but you can fold down the rear seats for more room.

Interior space is also ample, and adults will be comfortable even in the back. There’s plenty of head and legroom, and they both get extra storage.

The iX has armrest storage and the iX3 brings pop-out cup holders, seat nets, and a small centre storage compartment.

iX vs. iX3: safety and reliability

In 2021, the BMW iX was awarded a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. That includes an impressive 91% for adults and 87% for children.

Yet to be tested by Euro NCAP, the iX3 can be compared to its sibling, the X3’s, five-star rating.

EVs in general tend to be more reliable. You have fewer moving parts to maintain, so that usually equals less issues.

The iX and iX3 themselves get high praise on reliability surveys and in reviews, with plenty of drivers happy with the build quality.

We’ve given you a lot to work through there, but it’s undeniable that the iX vs. iX3 is a tough fight. They’re both impressive SUVs that come packed with tech and are comfortable to drive.

The iX could be a bit of a shock to the system to those not used to EVs, but it’s a great choice if you want something massively modern.

For something more traditional, the iX3 might be the route for you – it’s a classic, handsome Beamer, just powered with the silent power of electricity.
