If you’re searching for cars similar to BMW 1 Series models, you’re likely a fan of the sporty hatchback shape but maybe not quite sold on the 1 Series itself.

It’s a high-quality car with a premium feel and comes from a respected brand – but that does come with a higher price tag than some similar options.

Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, says: “With agile handling, a refined interior, and promising new engine options it delivers a sophisticated sportiness, so is this all the car you need?”

Before you take the plunge, we’ve put together a list of cars similar to BMW 1 Series models so you can weigh up your options.

Our top eight cars similar to the BMW 1 Series

  • Audi A3

  • BMW X1

  • Volkswagen Golf

Audi A3

The good thing about shopping for a fancy German hatchback is that you’ve got options. One of those is the coveted Audi A3.

It probably prioritises comfort in areas the 1 Series chooses performance, so opt for this one if you want a plush driving experience.

It’s based on the same platform as the VW Golf (we’ll get onto that later...) so you know the VW Group has faith in its build. So nice, they used it twice.

BMW X1

It’s the 1 Series, but an SUV. The BMW X1 is the one to pick if you want to get in on the SUV trend, or maybe you’ve been driving a 1 Series and want to graduate to something bigger.

Speaking of bigger, the X1 overshadows the 1 Series’ 380-litre boot with its own 540-litre space.

The interior feels more spacious as well, but we promise it doesn’t feel that much chunkier to drive.

Opt for the X1 M Sport model if you want to turn up the aggressive styling and add larger wheels.

Volkswagen Golf

We said we’d come back to it – the VW Golf is one of the best cars similar to the 1 Series.

It shares much of its build with the A3, meaning it’s easy to maintain and is reliable.

Sam tested the 1.5-litre petrol engine with the six-speed manual gearbox that offers 150hp and 250Nm of torque.

He said: “We think this engine is the sweet spot for the sensible Golf range, offering punchy performance from lower down in the rev range that picks up in a controlled, linear fashion – a mild evolution of what we had before.”

Mercedes A-Class

In the same vein as the A3, the A-Class is another premium German offering similar to the 1 Series.

This one also feels more comfortable and, dare we say, sensible than the feisty-looking 1 Series. It’s also a more relaxed drive, though the 1.3-litre petrol engine offers 134hp and can still feel nippy.

The saloon shape feels refined and grown-up, though space on the inside is on par with its rival. The 370-litre boot is also pretty similar.

Mazda3

Often overlooked, the Mazda3 is a great alternative to the BMW 1 Series – especially if you like a premium interior.

There’s an easy-to-use infotainment screen, plenty of knobs and buttons, and a proper sporty, cockpit feel.

It’s sporty to drive as well, getting 186hp and 240Nm of torque from the e-Skyactiv model.

Boot space is ample at 358 litres, and you can extend this to 1,028 litres with the seats folded.

MG4

MG4 driving

The MG4 is a great value option if you’re a fan of the 1 Series but fancy something electric.

That doesn’t mean it feels cheap or limited – the MG 4 has tech on offer like a 360-degree camera and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android.

You’ll get up to 329 miles of range, which is typically enough for a week of casual commutes and driving around town.

Opt for the Trophy Extended Range model to get all the bells and whistles and the best possible mileage.

MINI Countryman

MINI Countryman

The MINI Countryman is similar to the 1 Series (and even shares its platform with the larger X1) but has an iconic look that some might consider to be cooler than the BMW.

Technically an SUV, the Countryman has a 450-litre boot and plenty of interior space without feeling much bulkier than the 1 Series.

Sam said: “it’s a very well-rounded small SUV that provides as much space as it does tech.

“And it feels like a nice breath of fresh air among some very similar-looking and feeling rivals.”

SEAT Leon

SEAT Leon front

The SEAT Leon is a car similar to the BMW 1 Series that is arguably better in most ways – a strong statement with evidence behind it.

It’s cheaper than the 1 Series because you’re giving up the flashy Beamer badge, but you’re still getting a car that measures up.

For example, the diesel Leon is more efficient than the diesel 1 Series. The 1 Series 116d gets up to 62.1mpg, while the 2.0 TDI Leon gets up to 65.7mpg.
