Cars with head-up displays

Take a look at some of our favourite cars with head-up display tech

Heads-up display in Volkswagen cars

Last updated: 1 April 2025

If you’re looking for cars with head-up display technology, you’re in luck. What used to be a rare sight and something otherworldly is now landing in more and more cars.

Head-up displays (or HUDs) show information like your speed and directions into the driver’s line of sight – projecting onto the road.

Some drivers opt out of the feature as it can be distracting, but it’s definitely a handy way to keep your eyes on the road while still being up to date on your vehicle. It can make you a safer driver, as you have no reason to look down or away from the road.

Head-up displays are more common in premium cars, but there are some more affordable options out there as well.

Take a look at some of our favourite cars with head-up display technology in our guide below.

The best cars with head-up displays 2025

Volkswagen ID.7

The Volkswagen ID.7 is a fully electric ‘fastback’ (that’s just a term for cars with a sloping rear roof) that’s sleek, comfortable and packed with tech.

The head-up display is seriously impressive – all models are equipped with an augmented reality HUD as standard.

This will show information like your battery charge level and lane-level navigation with arrows that sync up to the real world outside your window.

All of this makes a larger digital instrument cluster pretty useless, so it’s relegated to a much smaller screen.

Audi A4

While the Audi A4 was previously aimed at flashy execs, it’s now a premium family saloon (or estate) option with plenty of tech.

Sam Sheehan, our motoring editor, took the A4 for a drive and said: “Absolutely everything you touch on a regular basis is either solidly classy, sumptuously soft or operates with slick precision”.

As for the head-up display, the high-contrast images are easy to see and nicely tucked just under your eyeline.

It can display your current speed and the speed limit, turn-by-turn navigation directions, road sign information and driver assistance alerts.

Jaguar E-PACE

It might feel a bit weird to think of the classy Jaguars getting all techy, but the flashy E-PACE is eager to show off a very impressive head-up display.

This one shows information like your speed and navigation directions, as well as important alerts from your phone and the Touch Pro Touchscreen – though this can be turned off if you prefer.

The display itself is a full-colour, high-resolution offering that matches the luxury vibe of the car.

There’s also an optional 12.3-inch digital driver's display to complement your HUD, covering everything from entertainment to driver information.

Range Rover Evoque

If you like a premium SUV, then you know the Range Rover Evoque. Sam describes it as a “bit of a stunner,” and praises its “style, driving enjoyment and genuine off-road ability”.

The head-up display is worth praising as well. It will display information like your current speed, cruise control speed, turn-by-turn navigation and traffic sign recognition.

The brightness can be easily adjusted and it’s really easy to read, though we might ever-so-slightly prefer the styling of HUDs on the E-PACE and BMW.

BMW 3 Series

You’d be hard-pressed to find a driver that doesn’t love a BMW 3 Series. They’re a true staple and come in a few variations.

The head-up display is a great addition to the 3 Series’ line-up of tech. You might find that some models around the 2021 mark are lacking the feature due to a semiconductor shortage, but it was first introduced in 2013.

Depending on the year you choose, the 3 Series head-up display can show information like your speed limit, the road speed limit, directions, and safety warnings.

Mazda 3

Mazda3 heads-up display

If you want a perky hatchback with a head-up display, can we recommend the Mazda 3?

This one has seen a few different variations, with early models having a clear, free-standing panel in front of the steering wheel. This has gradually evolved to the projection set-up that most cars now use.

It’ll show you information such as your speed and safety alerts, as well as directions from a smartphone system of your choice (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto).

Volvo XC60

Volvo XC60 cockpit

The Volvo XC60 is a reliable SUV with plenty of tech – Sam says it’s “hands-down one of the most comfortable premium SUVs on sale, especially as it’s not the most expensive in the class”.

The head-up display shows all the details you’d expect, including cruise control, speed, navigation, and warning information.

It will also give you phone call notifications if your smartphone is connected to the system.

You can easily activate and deactivate the HUD by looking in your car’s settings.

Mercedes GLE

Another premium option with a flashy head-up display – the Mercedes GLE is a stylish SUV that’s coveted by families with good taste.

The HUD on this one looks slightly like spy tech – the graphics feel more dynamic and edgy.

It delivers all the usual important information, like your speed, cruise control settings, directions and traffic conditions.

The head-up display came in an additional pack that you could add to your GLE, so if you find a used model with this feature then you’re saving even more money.
