The cheapest 7-seaters to insure UK
Eight of the cheapest seven-seater cars to insure and what makes them worthwhile
Looking for the cheapest seven-seater cars to insure in the UK can be a confusing job. There are plenty of options on the market, but how do you know what your insurance will actually cost?
Insurance prices in the UK are based on two sets of guidelines, depending on the age of your car, as well as factors about you as the driver.
Insurance providers look at things like your driving history, predicted annual mileage, where you’ll park the car overnight and even your job title to help decide how much you should pay.
They also use insurance groups or Vehicle Risk Ratings (for cars registered after 1 August) to decide how much it’ll cost to insure different cars.
Insurance groups range from one to 50 and are based on things like the performance and safety of the car. The lower the group, the cheaper the insurance.
Vehicle Risk Ratings rank five factors, including repairability and security, from one to 99 and can be updated over time. The lower the scores, the cheaper to insure.

Cheap 7-seater cars to insure
Dacia Jogger
Insurance group: 13 to 16 (models from 2022 to present)
When looking for a practical seven-seater car, you’ll find plenty of SUVs, but the Dacia Jogger is a perfect alternative if you prefer the beefed-up estate look.
It’s affordable to buy and you know insurance can be cheap because it’s on this list. On top of that, the hybrid engine offers up to 58.9mpg – so won’t spend a fortune on fuel.
The cheapest pre-2024 model to insure will likely be any of the 1.0-litre engine options, though the 1.6-litres are still only in insurance groups 16, so are also cheap to get covered.
Ford S-Max
Insurance group: 16 to 34 (models from 2015 to 2024)
The Ford S-Max is a seven-seater family car that can’t be argued with. It’s practical, reliable and hard-wearing – and it’s a surprisingly sporty MPV.
Diesel engines take the spotlight, all offering over 50mpg, but there’s also the fancy Duratec 190 FHEV petrol engine for some hybrid driving.
Insurance groups vary on the S-Max, but it’s still one of the cheapest seven-seaters to insure. Look for the 2.0 TDCi Zetec model (in group 16) or the 1.5 EcoBoost Zetec (group 19) to keep costs low.
Citroën Grand C4 Picasso
Insurance groups: 13 to 26 (models from 2014 to 2018)
Another MPV seven-seater that’s practical and reliable, the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso has worked hard to secure its reputation as a great-value car that can be trusted. And, since it’s a Citroën, it’s funky and super comfy.
Great value comes with low running costs, and the Grand C4 Picasso delivers. The diesel options are best for fuel efficiency, getting up to 74.3mpg from the frugal 1.6-litre engine.
Of course, it wouldn’t be on this list if it wasn’t one of the cheapest seven-seaters to insure. Opt for the 1.6-litre VTi VTR models to sit in the lowest insurance group of 13.
Nissan X-Trail
Insurance groups: 21 to 31 (models from 2022 to 2024)
If you don’t fancy an MPV, the Nissan X-Trail is a seven-seater SUV that’ll help you get in on the current car trend.
It’s a stylish choice that feels more expensive than it is, and there’s a 445-litre boot at the rear that keeps it practical – even when all seven seats are in place.
There’s plenty of options for engines and drive trains, including the VC-Turbo mild-hybrid, e-Power full hybrid, and e-4orce four-wheel-drive.
And, of course, insurance for the X-Trail can be very reasonable. Look for the 1.5 MHEV 163 Visia Xtronic to land in insurance group 21 or 22, depending on the version.
Škoda Kodiaq
Insurance groups: 12 to 31 (models from 2017 to 2023)
The Škoda Kodiaq is one of the most coveted family cars on the market, and one of the cheapest seven-seaters to insure at the same time.
Not all models come with seven seats and there’s a smaller model to consider as well, but even at its max size it’s both comfortable and spacious.
There’s a 270-litre boot with the third row of seats up, but these seats can be folded with the rear seats to reveal a 2,005-litre loading space.
Look for 1.4 TSI 125PS models to land in insurance group 12 – offering the lowest insurance costs for a Kodiaq.
Peugeot 5008
Insurance groups: 11 to 29 (models from 2017 to 2024)
Another favourite SUV and one of the cheapest seven-seaters to insure, the Peugeot 5008 is hard to turn down.
Its flashy styling is ideal if you need space but don’t want to sacrifice an eye-catching set of wheels.
There’s also the full electric e-Peugeot to consider as well for greener motoring, though the diesel engines claim up to 60.8mpg.
Look for Active 1.2 and 1.6 models to get the lowest insurance groups from your 5008 – starting in group 11.
Kia Sorento
Insurance groups: 24 to 28 (2015 to 2020)
The Kia Sorento is another seven-seater that’s cheap to insure, and it’s a top option for a suave SUV with a very modern feel.
It only comes as a seven-seater, so the third row was never an afterthought, meaning there’s genuinely loads of room. Plus, it’s a Kia, so it gets a seven-year warranty to match those seven seats.
Newer Sorento models come with a massive 12.3-inch screen pairing for infotainment and driver display – though you’ll need to opt for pricier trim levels that may up your insurance. That’s always something to consider when shopping around.
To land in the lowest insurance group of 24, you’ll need to look for the 2.2-litre engine options.
Volkswagen Touran
Insurance groups: 9 to 21 (2015 to 2024)
The VW Touran is already a classic family car with loads of space and plenty of storage, so the fact it’s also one of the cheapest seven-seaters to insure is just the cherry on-top.
It might not be as fashion-forward as some of the SUVs on the list, but you can’t argue with this much functionality. There are wide door openings, folding trays for backseat passengers, and huge door bins throughout.
With every single model sitting in the lower half of insurance groups, you can’t go wrong. Look for the 1.6 TFI SE to land yourself in group nine and keep things really cheap.
What makes a 7-seater cheap to insure?
Like we mentioned earlier, car insurance is based on the insurance group or vehicle risk rating, combined with factors about yourself as the driver.
Seven-seater cars that are cheap to insure will typically have good security and safety systems, a smaller and less powerful engine, and a lower risk of being stolen.
Modern cars are typically cheaper to insure as they’re safer than older models, but less valuable cars are typically cheaper on insurance as well.
Your best bet is to find a comfortable middle ground between all these factors.
You can also choose a safer location to park your car overnight, like a secure garage, to bring your insurance down.
Covering less annual mileage or building up a no-claims bonus can also help.
