The cheapest sports cars to insure are things of beauty. Power, performance, and car insurance that isn’t absolutely astronomical? Sounds like a dream.

If you’re tempted by a sports car but running costs are holding you back, we’ve picked a few of our favourite sports cars with low insurance (compared to other sporty models).

Cars with big engines and lots of power will never be cheap to insure, but some examples sit further down than others.

Insurance groups run from one to 50 for models registered before August 2024, with 50 being the most expensive to insure.

Newer models registered after August 2024 use the new Vehicle Risk Rating system.

Take a look at our top picks for the cheapest used sports cars to insure right here.

The cheapest sports cars to insure

Mazda MX-5 (2015 onwards)

  • Insurance group 25 to 33

The Mazda MX-5 has been a staple sports car since it hit the roads in the late '80s.

The original will forever be a classic, and even newer MX-5 models have stuck to the formula that made it such a hit.

We may not get pop-up headlights anymore, but this little Mazda is still a small, simple convertible sports car with bags of charm. The recipe of low weight, low power makes the MX-5 that much more engaging.

That low power also helps to keep running costs low, including insurance.

For example, the 1.5-litre SE model in insurance group 25. And you can expect to get about 40mpg – there aren't many more affordable cars to make you smile.

BMW Z4 (2009 to 2017)

  • Insurance groups 34 to 43

The BMW Z4 feels a bit like the big brother of the modern MX-5 – they're similarly sporty convertibles, but the MX-5 feels more agile and nimble than the chunkier, more powerful and grown-up Z4. Don't worry, the BMW is still a properly engaging drive.

For the lowest insurance group, opt for the 18i or 20i models that sit in group 34. These are still fun to drive, with the 20i offering 197hp and a 0-62mph of 6.6 seconds.

Despite all that, the Z4 can still be fairly low on fuel costs. That same 20i can get up to 40mpg. Bear in mind that's if you're driving sensibly though.

Toyota GR Supra (2019 to 2023)

  • Insurance groups 34 to 38

If you don’t want a convertible, the Toyota GR Supra is a gorgeous coupe sports car that shares lots of its parts with the excellent Z4 we mentioned above. And, like it's German cousin, it's as good to drive as it is to look at.

It gets the same high-quality look and feel inside, so it's ideal if you’re on the fence between German and Japanese engineering. A specific shout-out goes to the edition of the BMW iDrive infotainment system inside (which has Toyota graphics but is just as great to use).

As for running costs, the 2.0 engines are in the lowest insurance groups. The 2.0 Pro Auto model's in group 34, so should be the cheapest of the bunch to insure.

Audi TT (2014 to 2023)

  • Insurance groups 33 to 46

This wouldn’t be a sports car list without a mention of the Audi TT – a long-time top pick among motorists who want a sports car that's cheap to insure and still a lot of fun.

For the cheapest insurance, look for the 1.8-litre models in insurance group 33. You’ll still get a healthy 221hp inside this capable little coupé, but the engine isn’t big enough to ramp up your insurance bill.

If you want an automatic, the 1.8 TFSI S tronic models are pretty close by in group 35 but will get as much as 47.9mpg, so the fuel savings will balance out the slightly higher insurance costs.

Fiat 124 Spider (2016)

  • Insurance groups 25 to 26

A less-known pick, but no less enjoyable, is the Fiat 124 Spider – arachnophobes worry not, the only shivers this little convertible will send down your spine are from pure driving joy.

Our motoring editor, Sam Sheehan, said: “Fun and stylish sports cars don’t have to cost the world.

"Sure, you could remortgage your house to buy a supercar, or you could just buy an infinitely more affordable Fiat 124 Spider, which is as slick as it is modestly priced.”

For the cheapest models to insure, look for the Classica 1.4 MultiAir model. Its modest 140hp means it sits in group 25 but, trust us, that's all the power you need in the 124.
