The best cheap SUVs to insure in the UK

Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage frontThe Kia Sportage is one of the most popular SUVs for a reason and one of those is its low insurance cost.

Used examples registered before August 2024 sit between insurance groups 15 and 27 (depending on spec), so the Sportage is on the mid-lower end.

The cheapest version is the Sportage 2 with the CRDi diesel engine – it gets pricier with the hybrid models as they’re more expensive and more powerful.

Low insurance groups are thanks in part to the Sportage’s clever onboard safety kit, cheap running costs and the strong reliability Kia’s famed for.

Nissan Juke

One big reason we see so many is down to their affordability. They’re cheap to buy, run and, arguably most importantly, insure.

Most used picks fall between insurance groups 11 and 18 if they were registered before August 2024, so the Juke is a wise buy, especially in its most affordable Acenta trim.

Renault Captur

Renault Captur drivingRenault knows how to style a car, and the Renault Captur is a prime example of it.

It’s not too brash, not too subtle but somewhere in the middle – if it were porridge, Goldilocks would pick the Captur.

It's cheap too, between insurance groups seven and 22 for a used Captur registered before August 2024, with the most affordable model to insure being the Play trim.

SEAT Ateca

SEAT Ateca front three quartersEveryone knows that SEAT is essentially the budget version of Volkswagen with a bit of Spanish flair. But what many people don’t know is that the quality is just as good, especially in the case of the SEAT Ateca.

It’s between groups eight and 24 if you buy a used one, so it’s very affordable to get on the road.

Plus, if you want the cheapest one going, try looking for an Ateca S with the smaller 1.0-litre petrol engine to save on buying as well as running costs.

Hyundai Tucson

Used ones can be found between insurance groups 12 and 23 for models registered before August 2024, which puts it nicely on the mid-lower end of the scale (groups go up to 50). And, for maximum savings, the two-wheel drive Connect SE model is the one to go for.

For its price, the onboard tech isn’t bad either, so you can enjoy listening to your beats via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Suzuki Vitara

Suzuki Vitara front three quartersA Suzuki Vitara is a more left-field choice, but if anything, that’s more of a reason to buy one. Not only will you feel more unique, but you’ll also benefit from Suzuki’s incredible reliability and robust engines.

Used ones are cheap to buy too, and they sit between insurance groups 11 and 23 (for models registered before August 2024). You want to go for the SZ5 trim to save the most money on insurance.

And thanks to its rugged off-road capabilities, it’s the perfect car for winter. There’s a reason it’s related to the Jimny...

Find SUVs that are cheap to insure

If you're ready to make the leap and buy your first (or next) used SUV then you've come to the right place.

Whether you're after comfort, power or some cheaper car insurance, our selection of SUVs offer a wide range of options for you.

Keep in mind that, while our picks are in some of the lower insurance groups, the actual cost of insurance will be different for everyone. It's always best to shop around for the best quote to get cheaper car insurance.

It’s also nothing that we’ve added insurance groups for used cars because new cars registered after 1 August 2024 use the ‘Vehicle Risk Ratings’ system to decide insurance costs. Find out more in our guide.
