Chery TIGGO 8 vs. TIGGO 9: Styling
Straight off the bat, these two Chinese SUVs look remarkably different, considering they’re from the same brand.
You’d expect there to be clear cost savings by making them near-identical, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It shows Chery seriously means business.
From the front, the two cars look almost identical, except the TIGGO 8 has a triangular grille pattern instead of the TIGGO 9’s diamond shapes across the grille.
Along the side, the differences start to come into play a bit more, with the TIGGO 9 being 85mm longer than the 8, and with a more swooping design overall.
The back is where they differ the most. The TIGGO 8 has an almost Audi-like rear light bar, while the TIGGO 9’s resembles one you’d find on a Porsche Cayenne, for example.
It’s very much a case of personal preference, and we think they both look smart in their own right.
Chery TIGGO 8 vs. TIGGO 9: What are they like to drive?
Let’s start with the TIGGO 8. There are two different versions: a 147hp 1.6-litre petrol engine or a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5-litre 204hp unit.
Both feel excellent on the road, but we’d lean more towards the PHEV if you want up to 56 miles of electric-only driving.
The TIGGO 9, on the other hand, offers one engine: a 1.5-litre petrol engine with the ‘Chery Super Hybrid’ (CSH) system.
This offers up to 87 miles of electric-only driving.
As for living with them on the road, both cars are incredibly smooth, aren’t phased by bumps in the road and feel at home around town or on the motorway.
Chery TIGGO 8 vs. TIGGO 9: Interior and technology
Both interiors are fundamentally very similar. Both are finished to a very high standard, and both get a massive 15.6-inch screen in the middle, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The TIGGO 8 comes with two trim choices: Aspire and Summit.
We’d recommend upgrading to the top-spec Summit trim to get a heated steering wheel as well as front and rear heated seats, cooled front seats, a massaging driver’s seat, a powered boot lid, a head-up display and a 12-speaker SONY sound system.
Meanwhile, the TIGGO 9 automatically comes in Summit trim, giving you all the bells and whistles from the get-go.
Chery TIGGO 8 vs. TIGGO 9: Boot space and practicality
Boot space is where the differences start to become more apparent.
The Chery TIGGO 8 has 494 litres of space, growing to 1,930 litres with the rear seats folded. Then, with all seven seats in place, you have 117 litres to play with.
The Chery TIGGO 9 has 819 litres of space with five seats in place, dropping to 143 with all seven seats up.
Fold them all down, and this grows to a massive 2,065 litres, essentially turning it into a plush Ford Transit.
Chery TIGGO 8 vs. TIGGO 9: Safety and reliability
Both cars are exceptionally safe. They come with safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Door Open Warning to protect passing cyclists.
While Chery might be a new brand to the UK, it’s already well-rooted in China, where it sells other TIGGO models too.
And just to set aside any worries you have about longevity, all cars get a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty with a separate eight-year hybrid battery warranty.
