What is the fastest BMW 1 Series?
Learn which BMW 1 Series models are the best for performance
What is the fastest 1 Series model?
The BMW 1 Series is a fine choice for a small, fun hatchback. BMW’s been making it since 2004, and it’s seen many different iterations since.
But what’s the fastest BMW 1 Series, and which one should you pick?
BMW M135i
The BMW M135i is the M Performance version of BMW’s smallest car.
Despite being a lower number, it actually replaced the outgoing M140i as the top-spec 1 Series and adds xDrive all-wheel drive (although it does have less power).
But that doesn’t mean it’s not impressive. The M135i is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 306hp and to propel it from 0-62mph in a swift 4.8 seconds.
BMW M140i
Unlike most hatchbacks, the M140i is a rear-wheel drive beast powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that produces 340hp and has a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds.
This puts it in the same class as the Mercedes A45 for power but has a much different experience thanks to its rare rear-wheel drive and 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine setup.
The M140 was discontinued in 2019, but thankfully, there are still plenty of deals on the used market to take advantage of.
BMW 128ti
One step down from the top-of-the-range M135i is the sporty 128ti – a proper hot hatch to take on the iconic VW Golf GTI.
Unlike previous hot 1 Series, the 128ti is front-wheel drive, putting it more in line with the driving characteristics of its rivals.
Power comes from a 265hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which may not sound particularly aggressive after the M135i and M140i, but it’s no slouch. Trust us.
Features of the fastest 1 Series BMW
Discuss the features that make these BMW 1 series models the fastest.
What makes a BMW 1 Series a fast car? There are lots of different factors to consider, such as the power output from the engine, weight, handling and tyres.
The top-spec 128ti, for example, pips the Golf GTI with its torque and power delivery at up to 4500rpm.
Granted, it weighs a hefty 1445kg, so it’s a little heavy for a performance hatchback, but it still manages a 6.1 second 0-62mph.
