Fuel efficiency: what's the best Ford car for economy?

Want a fuel-efficient Ford but don't know where to start? Here are some of its most economical cars with great MPG figures

article hero

Ever since it was founded in 1903, Ford has been one of the industry leaders in making reliable family cars that offer superb fuel economy.

The V8 Mustang and Ford GT obviously don’t prioritise fuel efficiency, but the five models below are the ones to have if you want to avoid stopping at a petrol station for as long as possible.

From the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E to the humble Fiesta, here are the used Ford models with the best MPG.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

  • Electric range: 202-372 miles

If you still want the Mustang name but with more seats and without the terrible fuel consumption, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is the way to go.

This all-electric family SUV is one of the best in its class, offering a range of up to 372 miles on a single charge, plenty of power (especially in the Mach-E GT), and lots of practicality.

Being an electric car, the Mach-E doesn’t get an MPG rating as such, but if you know you’re going to get circa 300 miles on a full charge then you can monitor this on your journey and stop to juice it up when needed.

One of the main perks of an electric car is reliability, which is high because there are fewer moving parts than there are with a traditional car engine. It’s also a relatively new model, so the chances of something going wrong as very low.

Ford Kuga

Fuel economy figures:

  • Petrol: 40.9-42.8mpg

  • Diesel: 46.3-60.1mpg

  • Hybrid: 50.4-51.4mpg

  • PHEV: 201.8-282.5mpg

Picking the perfect family car is one of the hardest things a parent has to decide on aside from a house and the actual children part. But thankfully, the Kuga ticks all the boxes, so it’s hard to ignore.

Luckily, the Kuga is available with a whole range of engines, from the standard petrol and diesel ones to the more efficient hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ones.

The first two engines would be ideal for most people, but if you fancy saving some pennies or live in a city, we’d recommend one of the hybrids – especially the PHEV, which can drive up to 35 miles on electric power alone.

The Kuga is, without a doubt, a reliable car, and that’s because it’s part of the Ford family, which spans across the UK, the US and beyond. This means many different parts from other cars are used throughout.

Ford EcoSport

Fuel economy figures:

  • Petrol: 34.4-48.7mpg

  • Diesel: 42.2-57.6mpg

The Ford EcoSport sits right in between the smaller Fiesta and larger Puma, giving you a tall hatchback experience for those who like sitting high up on the road.

The EcoSport is also popular thanks to its great affordability and good petrol and diesel engine options.

The petrol is the pick of the bunch for most people because it’s efficient, reliable and doesn’t need to be run as long as a diesel does.

The diesel is best for those who regularly drive longer distances because these engines are far happier when they’re being run for longer than a quick trip to Tesco and back.

Thanks to Ford’s big bank of goods, there’s also no fear of any issues because parts are always readily available.

Ford Focus

Fuel economy figures:

  • Petrol: 39.2-56.5mpg

  • Diesel: 44.1-67.3mpg

Despite all its rivals moving to electric power, the Focus has stayed true to its roots by offering a petrol and diesel engine – both of which are very frugal thanks to Ford’s EcoBoost mild hybrid (MHEV) technology.

The petrol offers up to 56.5mpg, while the diesel will get you over 67mpg. These are very impressive figures for engines without proper hybrid assistance, but the MHEV does help to boost its overall efficiency.

They’re also some of the most reliable engines you can have in the UK because they’ve been around for so long and the fact they’re constantly being improved by the geniuses in the factory.

Ford Fiesta

Fuel economy figures:

  • Petrol: 40.4-57.6mpg

  • Diesel: 54.3-65.7mpg

Ford makes and sells more than 20 different models in the UK but the one that stands out above the rest is the Fiesta, which has consistently been one of the best-selling cars across the entire country.

This is for a range of different reasons, but the main one is how good they are on fuel.

The basic 1.0-litre petrol engine gives you at least 40mpg, which is impressive for a small hatchback, while the larger diesel gives you up to 65.7mpg.

Like the Focus, reliability isn’t a concern because you know you’re getting something that’s always being incrementally updated to become the best version it can be.
