Ford Focus ST-2 vs. ST-3: which is better?

We compare the Ford Focus ST-2 and ST-3 performance trims to find out which hot hatch version delivers more

A true hot-hatch legend, the Ford Focus ST has plenty of appeal, offering something for pretty much everyone, whether that’s a fun family or a driving enthusiast.

With three levels on offer, it can be hard to know which Ford Focus ST is best for you. In this guide, we put the ST-2 and ST-3 through their paces.

Ford Focus ST-3 vs. ST-2: which has more style?

The Ford Focus ST-2 and ST-3 are both stylish and guaranteed to turn more heads than the standard Focus they’re based on.

In terms of looks, even enthusiasts will find it hard to tell the difference between them. However, there are some tell-tale signs, such as the ST-3’s unique dark grey alloys and red brake callipers.

Being performance models, both cars get an aggressive, sporty body kit with lowered suspension and striking 18-inch alloy wheels.

The style continues inside, where these ST models get Recaro sports seats finished in part-leather (ST-2) or full leather (ST-3) and a set of gauges on top of the dashboard to show turbo boost, oil pressure and oil temperature.

Although the sporty-looking ST-Line version, with its more economical engines, looks the part, the Ford Focus ST-2 and Ford Focus ST-3 really stand out.

What is it like to drive a Ford Focus ST-3 vs. ST-2?

Despite being sold as separate models, the Ford Focus ST-2 and Ford Focus ST-3 are mechanically identical, which means you’ll get the same spirited driving experience with either.

The Focus ST-2 and ST-3 models offer a really engaging setup – Ford’s cars are already known for accurate steering, but the added responsiveness and feedback from the firmer suspension make them even more thrilling.

For maximum performance, you’ll want to choose the 250hp 2.0-litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox.

It’s good for 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds – quicker than most other regular hatchbacks but not frighteningly so.

If you prefer the sound of a punchy diesel, the 190hp 2.0-litre model comes with a choice of manual or smooth-shifting dual-clutch automatic gearboxes.

The manual gets to 62mph in 8.1 seconds, but the super-slick auto does it in 7.7 seconds.

These models belong to the third-generation Focus, sold between 2010 and 2018. Ford dropped the numbers for its latest fourth-generation car, simply calling it the Focus ST.

Current-gen STs do have slightly less powerful engines, but this can be a good thing because you can use more power more often, and you’ll save on running costs.

What technology is in the Ford Focus ST-2 and ST-3?

Ford offers several different trim levels, and these performance ST models build on the solid foundations of the sporty-looking ST-Line trim.

ST-Line cars, and therefore ST-2 and ST-3 models, come with some perks, like keyless start and a heated windscreen, which makes deicing in those cold winter months far less of a chore.

ST-2 models have automatic lights and wipers plus an excellent touchscreen infotainment system with plenty of smartphone and radio connectivity and built-in sat-nav.

If you like your car tech, it’s worth upgrading to the ST-3. It has brighter xenon headlights, rear parking sensors and full keyless entry.

The front seats also get a pretty major makeover, including full leather upholstery, heating, and power adjustments.

The Ford Fous ST-2 and ST-3 are similar in size to many other performance hatchbacks, like the Volkswagen Golf, which comes in petrol GTI and diesel GTD forms.

Both the ST-2 and ST-3 models measure 4,362mm long, 2,010mm wide (including mirrors, and 1,471mm tall. They have the same 363-litre boot as the regular Focus models, which is ever so slightly below the average, but it’s still a lot bigger than you’d get in the Fiesta.

There’s also an estate version, which has a bigger 490-litre boot but is around 20cm longer. It measures 4,563mm long, 2,010mm wide, and 1,486mm tall.

Focus ST-2 vs. ST-3: which is more reliable?

Fortunately, because the Ford Focus ST-2 and Focus ST-3 are different trim variants of the same car, their reliability will be the same.

Both Ford and the Focus are known to be extremely reliable, and if something were to go wrong, parts are generally reasonably affordable and easy to come by.

It’s worth mentioning that the Focus ST models use a few additional performance parts, so they can be slightly more expensive. It’s worth looking after your Ford Focus ST to keep it running smoothly.

Main differences between the Focus ST-2 and ST-3

If you want a hot hatch, the Ford Focus ST is an excellent choice, whether you want a hatchback or an estate.

The ST-2 and ST-3 models offer identical performance, with the main changes focusing on standard equipment.

Both are already considered to be high-spec cars, but as its name suggests, the ST-3 offers more than the ST-2.

The biggest thing to understand is that kit levels are what set the Ford Focus ST-2 and ST-3 apart. So, if you can afford a higher-spec ST-3 model, the level of tech will help it feel newer for longer.

For the ultimate hot hatch experience, the petrol engine is a must. However, if you want to save on fuel, Ford says the 185hp diesel should get similar mpg to the 150hp unit in standard Focus models.

With this being a previous-generation model, used examples of both the ST-2 and ST-3 are more affordable. The difference between the trim levels will also be lower now than when new, so you should be able to find the model you want.
