Ford Focus vs. Vauxhall Astra: which is better?

Can't decide between the Focus and Astra? Read our full comparison to help with your choice

Like the Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Corsa, the larger Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra rival each other in what has always been a competitive market in the UK especially.

You can also find plenty used Ford and used Vauxhall models at a reduced price if you want to save on costs.

If you’re looking for a reliable, medium-sized hatchback for your family then the chances are you’ve stumbled across one of these two, but which of these popular hatches is better for you?

Styling

The Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra are two cars that have been carefully designed for the masses, so don’t expect to see any wild styling cues or sharp angles. Instead, you can expect to find two handsome vehicles.

Being the grown-up siblings to the Fiesta and Corsa, much of the design language has been carried across.

For example, the Focus’s front is reminiscent of that found in other Ford models, and the Astra now features sharp LED headlights like other Vauxhall models.

As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so picking one over the other based on looks alone isn’t something we can do for you.

But what we can say is that they’re both splendid to look at.

What are they like to drive?

When you get behind the wheel, you’re greeted by two cars that are enjoyable to drive. They’re simple to use, easy to park, and comfortable to sit in for hours on a long journey.

Neither were designed to be B-road bashers, but if you do enjoy driving then the Focus is the pick of the bunch for you because it’s got a punchy 1.3-litre EcoBoost engine and a well-balanced chassis – especially if you opt for the higher-spec Focus ST or Focus RS models.

Saying that, the Astra isn’t boring to drive as it still offers all the usual comforts and driving aids you’d find in any new car, so those motorway journeys will be a breeze.

Interior and technology

As you step inside either of these cars, you will be greeted by a clean and well-equipped interior.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in both models, meaning you don’t need to faff about getting to grips with a new infotainment system.

They also both have large screens to view your maps, music, radio or phone calls.

You may also be surprised by the level of quality in both these cars considering the price.

There are plenty of soft-touch plastics and leather across the dashboard and seats. Plus, the gearknobs and steering wheels are comfortable to hold and manoeuvre.

Both are functional throughout, but if we had to pick one over the other then the Astra just takes the lead as it feels that bit more premium.

Boot space and practicality

While they may look similarly-sized from the outside, the boot space is where you notice a difference.

The Ford Focus has a respectable 370-litre boot, whereas the Astra takes the lead with a 442-litre boot that makes it one of the largest in its class.

Both will be adequate for your weekly food shop or some suitcases – just note that the Vauxhall will be able to store a bit more.

Rear headroom and leg space are great in both cars, meaning adults in the back won’t feel squashed like they might in a small hatchback.

There’s also plenty of space at the front for the driver and the passenger so you don’t feel too close to one another.

Safety and reliability

When it comes to safety, both cars score highly, with the Focus taking the lead with five stars instead of the Astra’s four stars in their most recent Euro NCAP crash tests.

However, it should be noted that the Astra’s test was more recent and therefore stricter rules were applied, meaning they’re both fairly matched overall.

Reliability should not be a concern at all with either car because they both feature tried-and-tested parts that have been used in many other cars throughout the years.

Plus, both brands know a thing or two about building a solid family car.

Verdict: Ford vs Vauxhall: which should you buy?

If you enjoy driving and want a functional and well-built car that can do it all, then the Ford Focus is for you. It’s versatile and can be had as an estate if you need that extra boot space.

But if you still want a hatchback with a large boot and a great interior, then the Vauxhall Astra is for the one to go for.

Both cars have been battling it out for years, and either would make a great next car purchase because of their styling, practicality and low prices.
