Are Hyundai i20 models cheap to insure?

The Hyundai i20 is a dynamic small car with plenty to offer – but can it give cheap car insurance?

Getting to know Hyundai i20 insurance group prices is a smart step if you’re weighing up these slick superminis.

The i20 is ideal for a small family car or dynamic daily driver, but all that could feel lacklustre if running costs are high.

So, now you might be asking, ‘Is the Hyundai i20 cheap to insure?’ and wondering if it’s the way to go if you're sticking to a budget.

We explain Hyundai i20 insurance group prices and how to keep costs low in our guide.

Hyundai i20 insurance group ratings explained

Insurance costs can feel like a mystery, but there are two sets of factors that can influence price.

First are your personal circumstances – things like your driving history, any previous insurance claims, and your annual mileage can affect your premiums.

Secondly, cars are sorted into insurance groups that indicate insurance prices.

Insurance groups are based on things like:

  • Performance of the car

  • Security and safety features

  • Original cost of the car

Insurance groups range from one to 50, with the lower groups being the cheapest to insure.

Hyundai i20 models from 2020 onwards range from insurance groups 12 to 16 – so that’s a good sign it won’t be expensive to get covered.

Models from 2015 to 2020 sit in insurance groups four to 12, so can be a cheaper option to insure.

Most and least expensive i20 versions to insure

For Hyundai i20s between 2015 and 2020, the 1.2 litre engine in the S Air and Blue Drive models (insurance group four) will typically be the cheapest to insure.

On the opposite end, the Premium SE Nav 1.0 T-GDi 120PS sits in group 12 and will be slightly more to insure, but it’s still hardly expensive in the grand scheme.

For newer models from 2020 onwards, the 1.0T GDi 48V MHD SE Connect DCT sits in group 12 as the cheapest of the bunch to insure.

Models in group 16 are the most ‘expensive’ to insure – including the 1.0T GDi 48V MHD Ultimate, Premium and N Line.

Average i20 insurance costs for young drivers

Annoyingly, car insurance does tend to be more expensive for new drivers. Their lack of experience on the roads makes insurers see them as a higher risk.

Once you’ve racked up some experience with no insurance claims, costs are likely to go down. You should start to see cheaper insurance from as soon as your second year driving.

We can’t tell you exactly how much i20 insurance will be for new drivers (or old, for that matter), so it’s best to get a quote from insurance providers.

How i20 insurance prices compare to competitors

We love the Hyundai i20, but it’s not the only impressive small car on the market. Here’s how it compares with similar cars for insurance costs.

Hyundai i20 vs. Ford Fiesta

We’re not being lazy when we say the Ford Fiesta needs no introduction – it's one of the most popular cars on UK roads.

Fiesta insurance groups are widely spread because there’s been so many editions of the now-retired model.

Looking at a similar period to the i20, Fiestas from 2017 to 2023 covered insurance groups two to 30.

That’s a broad range, but if you compare similar size engines in the i20 and Fiesta line-up, you’ll find them to be around similar groups.

Hyundai i20 vs. Vauxhall Corsa

Another UK icon, the Vauxhall Corsa is a solid alternative to the Hyundai i20.

Again, looking at a similar time frame to the i20 models, Corsas from 2020 onwards sit in groups 10 to 26.

This puts them at a very similar range to Fiesta and i20 models – making them all a relatively cheap option to insure.
