Is the Vauxhall Mokka a good car?

Vauxhall Mokka driving

In short, yes. The latest generation of Vauxhall Mokka looks sharp, drives well and feels modern inside, marking a huge improvement over its predecessors.

It comes from the Stellantis era (Vauxhall’s parent company), which means it can dip into the Peugeot and Citroën parts bins for efficient engines and a comfortable ride.

Inside, the Mokka’s driver-focused layout places a touchscreen infotainment system at a slight angle towards the driver, so it feels like the wrap-around cockpit you’d get in a much sportier car like an Audi TT.

Is the Vauxhall Mokka a good SUV to buy?

We think the Vauxhall Mokka is one of the best compact SUVs on the market because it nails the brief from all angles – practicality, comfort and value for money.

If you’re looking for a used SUV for sale, you’ll struggle to find so many options elsewhere – we have petrol, mild hybrid, fully electric and even performance variants on offer.

Rear-seat space might not be overly generous, and the 350-litre boot isn’t huge, but it does everything you’d ask of an SUV and let’s not forget it’s the SUV equivalent of a Corsa, so things are going to be small. If you need more space, the Grandland could be for you.

Vauxhall Mokka Petrol

Vauxhall Mokka petrol engine

Vauxhall has been using the turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol for many years now, and we love it. It has just the right amount of punch, either with 100hp or 130hp.

We think it’s a perfect match for this car’s size, and makes a lot of sense for motorway drivers because 45-50mpg is still easily attainable.

Let’s not forget that this is the cheapest option, too.

Vauxhall Mokka Hybrid

The ‘Hybrid’ takes all that’s good about the petrol engine and adds a tiny 0.9kWh battery – it’s technically a mild hybrid, but the electric motor can drive the wheels for very short bursts.

Where it excels is in real-world fuel economy. Despite the small battery, it’ll do around one-third of your short town trips (like nipping to the shops) without the petrol engine, so it’s truly efficient.

A plug-in hybrid wouldn’t go amiss here, but this mild hybrid is mightily impressive. Plus, it’s super cheap to buy compared with bigger batteries.

Vauxhall Mokka Electric

Previously branded ‘Mokka-e’, the Mokka Electric is all that’s good about affordable electric motoring – it’s quiet, quick off the mark and ideal for towns and cities.

Choose from 50kWh or 54kWh battery packs (both with over 200 miles of range) and 136hp or 156hp electric motors.

Running costs can be next to nothing with a home charger and an off-peak energy tariff, and 100kW rapid charging gives you an 80% charge in around half an hour when you need to go a little further.

Vauxhall Mokka GSE

Vauxhall Mokka GSE

GSE is the badge Vauxhall gives to its uprated electric models – it’s like a hot hatch in an SUV dress, and in this case, it’s a fully electric performance crossover.

281hp means a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds, and 380mm brake discs help you slow down as fast as you sped up. It’s actually Vauxhall’s fastest EV to date, would you believe?

Inside, it’s all very familiar, but it’s based on a high-spec Mokka with a few extras thrown in to justify the higher price tag.

Vauxhall Mokka vs. rivals

The Vauxhall Mokka faces a lot of competition – small SUVs are the bread and butter of British motoring.

Other options include the Renault Captur (which has a bigger boot), Nissan Juke (more electric range on its hybrid system) and Ford Puma (better to drive).

The Mokka has value for money going for it, but it’s also very strong across the board including decent boot space, an impressive hybrid system and a rounded driving experience.
