Kia Sportage MPG and running costs
What’s the mpg on a Kia Sportage and is it cheap to run?
Kia Sportage MPG (miles per gallon) and running costs are something you’re probably going to think about a lot if you’re in the market for one of these popular SUVs.
If you’re using the Sportage for daily driving, getting plenty of miles to the gallon is ideal. It means you’ll be spending less on fuel but still getting far.
Different Sportage models get different MPG figures, tax prices, and maintenance costs - but loads of them can be cheap to run.

What does MPG stand for?
MPG stands for ‘miles per gallon’ and references how far your car can travel per gallon of fuel.
This is a good indicator of how fuel efficient your vehicle is and how much money you’ll likely spend on fuel.
A figure around 40mpg is a good indicator of a fuel-efficient car, but these numbers and their meaning differ based on the vehicle.
Chunky SUVs will always be less fuel efficient than small hatchbacks, so bear this in mind when comparing MPG figures.

What affects MPG
You’ll notice that the Sportage MPG figures vary a fair bit, and that’s because there are small things that can make a big difference for efficiency.
Things like the car’s weight, gearbox and power can have an impact, as well as wheel size.
For example, a 1.6 GDi ISG two-wheel drive with 128HP can achieve up to 42.2mpg (combined) with 16-inch wheels, but that drops to 41.6mpg with larger 17-inch wheels.
Larger wheels usually make for poorer fuel efficiency but, in this case, the stats are still pretty strong.
How to get a better MPG in your Sportage
Fuel efficiency mostly comes down to the car you’re driving, but how you’re driving can also have an impact.
There are a few things you can do to improve fuel economy in a Sportage:
Shed some weight – from the car, of course... Carrying large loads will use more fuel to get you moving
Brake smoothly
Stick to the speed limit and avoid putting your foot down
Keep your tyres filled to the right pressure
Plan your route to keep things efficient – dodge traffic and stick to motorways where you can drive at a comfortable speed without stopping and starting
Kia Sportage running costs
The running costs that come with your Kia Sportage will be the same as the costs associated with other vehicles. You’ll need to consider factors like insurance, road tax, servicing and MOTs.
The Sportage will usually sit in insurance groups 15 to 26, depending on the model you choose.
This is a good indicator that insurance shouldn’t be too pricey, but getting a quote from your insurer is ideal as this will consider individual factors that could impact the price such as previous driving offences.
Road tax in the Sportage can be low as well, with average prices around £170 to £570 annually.
The priciest options are the Sportage models with the largest engines and the highest emissions.
MOT and servicing costs are the same across all models in the UK, and servicing is recommended but not a legal requirement.
The cost of a service will differ depending on the type you go for and where in the UK you’re servicing the car.
MOT costs in the UK are capped at £54.85 (as of August 2023) but this price doesn’t include any repairs or parts that your car might need.
Luckily, Sportage models are widely considered to be reliable so you shouldn’t find yourself carrying out too much work outside of normal wear and tear maintenance.
