What does MPG stand for?

MPG stands for ‘miles per gallon’ and references how far your car can travel per gallon of fuel.

This is a good indicator of how fuel efficient your vehicle is and how much money you’ll likely spend on fuel.

A figure around 40mpg is a good indicator of a fuel-efficient car, but these numbers and their meaning differ based on the vehicle.

Chunky SUVs will always be less fuel efficient than small hatchbacks, so bear this in mind when comparing MPG figures.

What affects MPG

You’ll notice that the Sportage MPG figures vary a fair bit, and that’s because there are small things that can make a big difference for efficiency.

Things like the car’s weight, gearbox and power can have an impact, as well as wheel size.

For example, a 1.6 GDi ISG two-wheel drive with 128HP can achieve up to 42.2mpg (combined) with 16-inch wheels, but that drops to 41.6mpg with larger 17-inch wheels.

Larger wheels usually make for poorer fuel efficiency but, in this case, the stats are still pretty strong.

How to get a better MPG in your Sportage

Fuel efficiency mostly comes down to the car you’re driving, but how you’re driving can also have an impact.

There are a few things you can do to improve fuel economy in a Sportage:

  • Shed some weight – from the car, of course... Carrying large loads will use more fuel to get you moving

  • Brake smoothly

  • Stick to the speed limit and avoid putting your foot down

  • Keep your tyres filled to the right pressure

  • Plan your route to keep things efficient – dodge traffic and stick to motorways where you can drive at a comfortable speed without stopping and starting

The Sportage will usually sit in insurance groups 15 to 26, depending on the model you choose.

MOT costs in the UK are capped at £54.85 (as of August 2023) but this price doesn’t include any repairs or parts that your car might need.
