MG IM vs. XPENG

Two new electric car brands battle it out to see which is the best for you

It’s hard to keep up with new Chinese electric car brands, especially high-end ones such as MG IM vs. XPENG.

Both offer luxury electric cars at highly competitive prices. Both arrived in the UK in 2025 and sell different types of cars with varying specs and looks.

But which brand resonates with you the most?

MG IM vs. XPENG

Our guide will answer:

  • Are MG IM or XPENG cars better to drive?

  • Does MG IM or XPENG have a better electric range?

  • Does MG IM or XPENG have better tech?

  • Which has the better styling?

  • Are MG IM or XPENG EVs more reliable?

  • Which has the better lineup?

MG IM vs. XPENG: what are they like to drive?

Split image showing a blue MG IM5 car on the left with a red backdrop, and a red XPENG G6 car under night lights on the right. If it’s pure performance you’re after, MG IM takes the lead.

You just need to look at the MG IM6 (SUV) and IM5 (Saloon) to see why. They’re out-and-out performance monsters.

The top-spec IM6 Performance produces a whopping 740hp, hitting 0-62mph in a staggering 3.5 seconds. Then, the IM5 produces the same power but can do the sprint in as little as 3.2 seconds.

XPENG, on the other hand, focuses more on the comfort element. The XPENG G6 and G9 are refined and quiet. They’re still powerful with up to 278hp, mind, but are a little more relaxing.

But either one is going to feel really responsive and quick from behind the wheel.

MG IM vs. XPENG: range & batteries

Two electric cars: a silver MG IM parked outdoors during the day, and an orange XPENG G6 in front of a lit bridge at night. Both brands make use of ultra-rapid 800V charging architecture, which is the gold standard for EVs.

This means both can charge from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes at a compatible rapid charger.

MG IM: The IM5 is a range champion, offering up to 441 miles on a single charge thanks to its massive 100kWh battery option.

XPENG: The XPENG G6 offers a respectable range of up to 354 miles, while the larger G9 SUV (coming to the UK soon) can cover around 345 miles, which is impressive considering the added size and weight.

MG IM vs. XPENG: interior and technology

Side-by-side cars: blue MG IM parked by a brick building, red XPENG at a race start line amidst greenery.

Inside an MG IM, you’re greeted by a dashboard that is almost entirely made of screens.

In the IM5, there’s a 26.3-inch screen, making it one of the largest ever seen in a car. Then, there’s a 10.6-inch touchscreen down below.

While MG IM does take a minimal approach, it’s nothing like an XPENG, which clearly takes some inspiration from Tesla in this department.

Their XOS operating system is one of the fastest in the world, and its cars excel in autonomous features, with some of the best self-parking and lane-keep assist systems currently available in the UK.

MG IM vs. XPENG: styling

Split image: Left is the rear of a white MG IM5 car; right is the front of an orange XPENG car, both set against a building backdrop.

MG IM cars aren't necessarily boring to look at, but they’re not particularly exciting either. Think Tesla Model S and Model Y – form over function.

These sleek shapes offer low drag coefficients, helping them slice through the air, which is why they see such high all-electric ranges.

XPENG has a more futuristic look with its signature robo-face and LED light bar spanning the front.

MG IM vs. XPENG: safety and reliability

Both brands have secured five-star Euro NCAP safety ratings, so you’re in safe hands regardless of your choice.

This is thanks to onboard safety features, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), lots of airbags, lane-keep assist, etc.

Both brands are still so new, so long-term reliability in the UK is more or less unknown, but we have full confidence in what they’re capable of.

MG IM is part of the SAIC/MG family, so they have an established network of mechanics and parts. XPENG is still building its service infrastructure, though its partnership with Volkswagen gives it a massive boost in technical credibility and long-term support.

MG IM vs. XPENG: practicality

Both car brands are pretty close, but cars like the IM6 are especially practical, giving Tesla Model Y levels of space.

The MG IM5 has a 457-litre boot, and the IM6 has a 665-litre boot.

XPENG currently only sells the G6 in the UK, with its 571-litre boot. But soon the G9 will arrive with a much larger 660-litre space.
