First-generation Nissan Qashqai (2006-2009)
The Nissan Qashqai was first shown to the public in concept form at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, where it displayed ‘a bold new design that pioneers a new sector of the market.’
And this statement is completely true. It was one of the first mainstream family SUVs at a great price, so it’s no surprise that Nissan sold more than one million of them in Europe – little did they know that future iterations would be even more popular.
Other than its family-friendly styling, the first-gen Qashqai was popular for its reliability and practicality.
Facelifted Nissan Qashqai (2009-2013)
In 2009/2010, Nissan gave the Qashqai its first refresh, where it received a restyled front and rear, new LED taillights, a new instrument panel and better soundproofing.
For European models, Nissan made electronic stability control (ESC) standard across the range, added two new colour options and the Pure Drive diesel variant for better efficiency.
Second-generation Nissan Qashqai (2014-2021)
Following the first generation’s massive success, it was a no-brainer for Nissan to bring out a facelift.
This car had a sharper look and was now sitting on the newer and larger CMF-CD platform also used on the Renault Kadjar and Nissan X-Trail.
It was offered in a massive range of petrol and diesel engines, with the most popular being the 1.6-litre petrol.
Third-generation Nissan Qashqai (2021-2024)
The third generation arrived in 2021 and was even bigger than before, in length (35mm longer), width (20mm wider) and height (25mm taller).
To improve it, Nissan started using lightweight materials such as aluminium for certain body panels, a range of more efficient hybrid engines and a more compact, redesigned suspension setup for a better ride and more boot space.
The real key to its success, though, was the introduction of e-POWER technology.
This is where the petrol engine acts as a generator to charge the battery, which powers an electric motor to drive the wheels, giving you the smooth, instant torque of an electric vehicle without ever needing to plug in.
Facelifted Nissan Qashqai (2024-present)
In 2024, Nissan brought out the next Qashqai facelift with redesigned headlights and rear lights (inspired by the all-electric Ariya), new wheel designs, an upgraded interior and the addition of Google to its infotainment system.
Special model generations
Nissan Qashqai+2 (2008-2013)
Since the standard first-generation five-seat Qashqai was a runaway success, Nissan decided to launch a seven-seat variant, which was 211mm longer.
This made a great option for larger families.
