Peugeot 3008 vs. Peugeot 5008: which is better?

Peugeot is a supplier of some of the most popular used SUVs, and here we compare two of their finest models to determine which is best: the 3008 or the 5008

Fancy a stylish French SUV but struggling to pick between the used Peugeot 5008 vs. used Peugeot 3008?

With a choice of five or seven seats, you’ll need to focus on how much space you want, because they’re both practical and good-looking, and you won’t have to skimp on kit either.

Compare Peugeot 3008 vs. 5008: style?

The Peugeot 3008 and the Peugeot 5008 both share a common design language that’s typical of all Peugeots, helping to give them a strong brand identity and to stand out among a sea of other SUVs.

The 3008 has smaller dimensions and a generally sportier feel, thanks to the French brand’s use of sharp lines and sculpted surfaces.

Its front end has a bold design that includes a unique grille and headlight design. The back is just as eye-catching, thanks to the use of two-tone paint.

The 5008 is much larger and is one of the most affordable seven-seater SUVs you can buy. It has a very similar design approach, but a boxier rear end that makes headroom for the rearmost passengers.

Both models share a lot of unique Peugeot features, like the brand’s claw-effect light designs, making them some of the best-looking SUVs out there.

Is the Peugeot 5008 or Peugeot 3008 better to drive?

Although it’s an SUV, the 3008 isn’t as tall as some other crossovers, helping to give it a nimble and engaging feeling. This, combined with the low steering wheel, makes for a pleasant experience not too dissimilar from a hatchback.

It's also easy to drive around towns and cities thanks to its reasonably compact dimensions and elevated driving position.

In comparison, the 5008 is geared more towards carrying a car full of people in comfort, so the suspension has been adapted with that in mind.

Both models benefit from the brand’s commitment to building some of the most efficient engines out there. The 1.2-litre petrol is the pick of the bunch – it’s punchy, but hugely efficient.

3008 vs. 5008 interior

All Peugeot models have well-thought-out interiors that make good use of intuitive infotainment systems and physical controls that are easy to use on the move.

There’s plenty of room inside the Peugeot 3008 for a family of five, and it has a big boot for a car of this size.

The 5008 is just as impressive, but the sixth and seventh seats are mostly ideal for younger children. The boot, however, is cavernous.

They’re pretty smart, too. Many high-spec models come with 3D-effect digital instrument displays, but even lower-spec cars get a good infotainment system and staples like cruise control.

Peugeot 5008 vs. 3008: boot space

The Peugeot 3008 has a 591-litre boot, which is around 100 litres more than you’d find in something like a Nissan Qashqai. The hybrid model has a significantly smaller boot (395 litres) to accommodate the extra batteries, but this is still more than you’d get in some hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf.

If you’re likely to make your decision based on the Peugeot 5008 vs. 3008 boot space, then the 5008 takes the lead by a long way.

With all seven seats in an upright position, the Peugeot 5008 has a small 167-litre space. Still, this is nearly as much as you’d get in a much smaller Peugeot 108.

In five-seat mode, however, it extends to 952 litres, which is massive. If you need maximum space, you can fold the middle row and unlock 2,042 litres of space, which is more than most other SUVs and estates.

Peugeot 3008 vs. 5008: reliability and safety

Both models consistently perform well in customer feedback surveys and rank highly in terms of dependability, with plenty of positive remarks made about their engines, transmissions and interior quality.

Because they’re so similar mechanically, Euro NCAP actually issued a five-star rating to them both simultaneously. They performed well in many key areas, especially adult and child occupant protection.

Peugeot 3008 vs. 5008 dimensions

At 4,447mm long, the 3008 SUV is only a touch longer than the 308 hatchback, which means you’ll have no problems fitting it into a parking space. It’s 2,098mm wide with the mirrors in place, and 1,624mm tall.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the 5008 is a lot taller, but it’s only 2.2cm taller, at 1,646mm. It’s exactly the same width as the more compact 3008.

The key difference is in its length. This seven-seater SUV measures 4,641mm long. Still, that’s shorter than many saloons like the Peugeot 508, proving how cleverly packed the 5008 is to fit seven people in it.

Used Peugeot 5008 vs. used Peugeot 3008: which should you buy?

Since introducing its new design language in around 2018, all modern Peugeots have looked great and stand out from the crowd, and while the French brand announced revisions to its styling set to come in from 2023, the 3008 and 5008 will continue to look the part.

Both offer similar levels of practicality and driving experiences in the real world, so the true question comes down to whether you often need to carry more people or kit. For most people, the 3008 is just right.
