Options like the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3 and Audi Q5 definitely have that premium appeal, but there are SUVs that are much more budget-friendly and just as impressive.

Renault Kadjar
For something laidback, minimalist and ideal for family life, the Renault Kadjar is an ideal choice.
Even entry-level models are well-equipped, and you can get some serious bargains on the used market.
There’s a 472-litre boot at the rear, and the interior itself has a premium feel that’s hardwearing and features a seven-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Skoda Karoq

In 2022, the Karoq received a facelift that means older models might look slightly different.

You can choose from a petrol or hybrid model, with petrol being on the lower end of the budget, and there’s also a choice of four-wheel- and two-wheel-drive models.
In the E-Power model, you can achieve up to 53.3mpg. Petrol engines aren’t too far behind, with the 1.3-litre model capable of up to 44.5mpg with mild-hybrid tech.

The Kia Sportage is another popular option for an SUV that won’t break the bank, and it’s a great value-for-money option that features plenty of tech.
There's a range of engines to choose from, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid options for boosting your fuel efficiency.
You can expect to cover up to 43 miles using purely electric power in the PHEV model, but these are the more expensive choices.
The Sportage claimed a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in 2022, with 87% for adult occupants and 86% for children. This makes it a secure and reliable SUV for daily use.

Citroen C5 Aircross
For something with a unique look and plenty of quirky flair, the Citroen C5 Aircross ticks all the boxes.
Its head-turning looks are ideal for motorists who enjoy something that stands out while still managing to be a spacious and comfortable SUV.
In fact, you can expect up to 580 litres of boot space with the seats fully in place, but you can extend this to 720 litres if you push the seats forward.
The cabin itself is enjoyable for even adult passengers, with plenty of head and legroom.

You can expect up to 422 litres of boot space in the standard models, while hybrid options lose some boot space to fit in the extra hybrid tech. These models offer a 354-litre boot – plenty for most motorists.
In 2019, the Juke received a five-star Euro NCAP rating, with an impressive 94% adult occupant ratings and 85% for children.

Recent models, although the more expensive of the bunch, also received a fresh facelift with added trim levels.
The boot is generous as well – 522 litres until you fold the rear seats. Once folded, you’ll have up to 1,620 litres to play with. The cabin is also spacious, with plenty of head and legroom.
You’ll have a choice of trim options, including the priciest GT Sport which features a 360-degree camera and powered sunroof.

Dacia Jogger
For something with a bit of an outdoorsy feel, the Dacia Jogger is an SUV that can easily seat up to seven people.

There’s a choice of engines in the Captur range, including a pricier plug-in hybrid option that can achieve up to 188.3mpg combined.
Even the petrol options are frugal, using up to 48.7mpg from the TCe 140 engine.
