An eye-catching car that's stylish and timeless is a real treat to live with, but you don't just have to pick supercars.

There are plenty of family SUVs, city cars and sleek saloons that are also very attractive.

Take a look at some of our top picks for the best-looking cars you can buy.

The best-looking cars ever

Before we get into the newer picks, we have to acknowledge stunning cars from years gone by.

Classic sports cars are widely acclaimed as beauties, with their swooping, aerodynamic lines.

Take the Jaguar E-Type, for example. Enzo Ferrari said that it was the most beautiful car in the world, and let’s face it, he knew a thing or two about building beautiful cars. It is an undisputed all-time classic.

Throw a dart at any wallchart of classic Ferraris and you’re bound to hit something that will turn heads. The 250 GTO from the early 1960s is a real beauty, while the 308 GTB/GTS, the 'Magnum Ferrari', is the epitome of 1980s cool.

Our choice?

The compact and curvy 246 GT Dino from the early 1970s.

Fiat 500e - best-looking city car

There's a reason why the Fiat 500 is so popular, and the Fiat 500e is the newer electric variant.

It still retains the classic look we've grown accustomed to, featuring some new grille detailing and a larger, 500e-specific badge.

The 500e is available in some stunning colours, including Rose Gold, Acid Green, Celestial Blue (shown above) and a classy Onyx Black.

The interior is stunning as well, with coloured dash inserts that coordinate with the body shade.

Mazda3 - best-looking family hatchback

The Mazda3 continues a trend for the Japanese carmaker to prioritise design in its cars.

The latest 3 is pretty stunning. Its long bonnet and set-back cabin give it a real air of sportiness, though not as aggressive as some of the German options it competes with.

Sam Sheehan, motoring expert, said: "It doesn’t matter whether you’re going for the current-shape Mazda 3 or its immediate predecessor, you’re getting a funky-looking hatchback that stands out from its immediate contemporaries."

Alfa Romeo Giulia - best-looking saloon

Alfa Romeo Giulia front

The Italians know a thing or two about designing cars and Alfa has a strong tradition in the field of design.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia offers a real point of difference compared to its German rivals – and is all the better for it.

The design is unique, with the triangle grille standing out between two squinting headlights.

You can also choose from a range of trims that change up the styling. The Nero Edizione adds 18-inch alloys, gloss black window surrounds and black mirrors.

Volvo V60 - best-looking estate

Volvo is designing some of the best-looking cars on sale at the moment: in fact, there’s a strong argument to say that every one of its cars is the most stylish in its class.

The Volvo V60 is no exception, with the larger V90 estate probably the next best.

The interior is suave as well, with a plush cabin that's packed with screens and some massive vents that give it an aeroplane feel.

BMW i3 - best-looking electric car

BMW i3 front

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the future, so you want your EV to look futuristic. That's exactly what the BMW i3 does, in spades.

It has an angular feel, but that works well with the need to be compact for urban environments.

We also think it's the quirkiest of BMW's styling. While the brand usually gives us fat and low body types, this plump hatchback is aggressive but interesting.

Range Rover Evoque - best-looking compact SUV

The best things are often copied, and the Range Rover Evoque has been the styling blueprint for many SUVs.

Just take a look at UK roads - so many small SUVs have Evoque characteristics. Whether it's the estate-like roofline or the thin headlights and abundance of grille, it's definitely been a trendsetter.

Sam said: "The Range Rover Evoque is a bit of a stunner.

"It looks equally at home on the high street, outside the local school, or at the far end of a farm track."

Volkswagen ID. Buzz - best-looking people carrier

VW ID. Buzz side

If you're after a people carrier that doesn't put function over style, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz will tick boxes.

Taking inspiration from VW's famous campers, the Buzz is available as a five, seven or seven-seat long-wheelbase model.

The colour combinations for the exterior are unique and eye-catching - especially the Bay Leaf Green and Lime Yellow.

Porsche Cayenne - best-looking large SUV

Porsche Cayenne side

It wouldn't be a best-looking car list without mentioning Porsche, and we're picking the Cayenne SUV as a favourite.

The Porsche Cayenne is handsome and elegant, with an interior that might feel more comfortable than your own living room.

There's no mistaking the luxury in this one, with its bug-like features and commanding presence.

Sam said: "The Cayenne is a full-size SUV with the driving characteristics of a Porsche sports car.

"It features a prestigious badge, solid German engineering and an up-market luxury feel throughout."

Stylish cars on a budget

If you’re looking for something that looks the part but don’t have Ferrari money, you can still pick up something that will turn heads.

A Kia Sportage is a good call for a sleek SUV at a smaller price point.

If you want something that combines the convenience of a supermini with a sporty edge, you could pick up a Ford Fiesta ST, which is lot of fun to drive, too.

Spanish carmaker SEAT is also strong on design, so a Leon family hatchback combines practicality with a shapely form. For under £10,000, you can get a three or four-year-old car in sporty FR trim.
