Battery-powered cars are advancing at a rapid pace, and so are their claimed ranges. Here are the electric cars on sale today that come out on top in the range game
When we talk about electric vehicles (EVs), you’ll often hear people mention ‘range anxiety'.
Early EV adopters often worried about whether they’d even make it to the end of their journey. But that was then.
Battery tech has come on leaps and bounds since then, so you can now drive more than 400 miles on a single charge without a care in the world.
But what electric cars will take you the furthest based on the manufacturer-claimed range?
(We say that because claimed range should be taken with a pinch of salt but the highest will still drive the furthest real-world.)

1. Mercedes-Benz EQS – 481 miles

The Mercedes EQS is, in many ways, a luxurious bar of soap on wheels. With a 0.20 drag coefficient, it’s officially the slipperiest car in production, which helps it achieve the stellar 481-mile range.
That class-leading range doesn’t come cheap, though – EQS start at more than £100,000. But you are getting one of the most luxurious cars on the market, so it’s swings and roundabouts.
Plus, it supports 200kW fast charging, cutting wait times to just 30 minutes for a 10-80% charge, because if you have an EQS then you have places to be and people to see.
2. Volkswagen ID.7 – 424 miles

If you’re a long-time fan of the Passat, the Volkswagen ID.7 will be right up your street.
As the spiritual successor to the petrol and diesel-powered Passat (now only offered as an estate), the fully-electric ID.7 ‘fastback’ offers a superb range of up to 424 miles.
The standard ID.7 Pro gets a respectable 373 miles of range, but upgrade to the Pro S and that’s when you unlock the added range.
All this in a car that costs almost half as much as the EQS and is still plenty premium enough for most.
3. Peugeot e-3008 – 422 miles

Peugeot has taken a big leap forward with its design and quality in recent years, and now they’ve done the same with the range in the e-3008.
The French SUV is now comfortably in the big leagues with an impressive 422 miles of range.
The 2024 refresh turned the e-3008 into what Peugeot calls a ‘fastback SUV’ and, as well as a really slick look, it brings the drag coefficient right down to 0.28 for extra efficiency.
Plus, it has aggressive regenerative braking that helps to pump extra range back into the battery when you need it the most.
The long-range e-3008 is due to arrive in late 2024, but it’ll still cost considerably less than some of the other names on this list. And you’ll get Peugeot’s great build quality and premium feel.
4. Porsche Taycan – 422 miles

Porsche’s luxury electric saloon received a whopping 35% boost to its electric range in the 2024 refresh.
The Taycan was already one of the most compelling EVs on the market, but this new 422-mile range – along with the styling and tech updates – adds a whole new dimension.
To go the distance, you’ll have to choose the single-motor, rear-wheel drive Taycan with the optional 105kWh Performance Battery Plus.
Don't worry if you want an all-singing all-dancing Taycan Turbo S; they also got a bump of more 140 miles with the 2024 refresh, thanks to the 97kWh battery.
On top of all of that, it’s up there with the fastest-charging electric cars at 320kW – 50kW faster than before.
5. Polestar 2 – 406 miles

A facelift is always an exciting change but can sometimes feel pointless for a car that’s already near-perfect. Well, somehow Polestar has made the ‘2’ even better.
The main change was switching it from front-wheel drive to a more-dynamic rear-wheel drivetrain, but it also got a cheeky extra 4kWh of battery capacity for good measure.
This gives it a claimed range of up to 406 miles in its most efficient Long Range form.
Used examples of the Polestar 2 are even better value for money than before thanks to a wonderful thing called depreciation... unless you’re the person who bought it new.
6. Tesla Model S – 405 miles

The Tesla Model S was launched in 2012 and has since become one of the most talked-about EVs in the world.
Throughout its decade-long life, it has sat near the top of the tree for battery range, even if it has since been bested by some new contenders.
It claims 400+ miles on a charge, although that’s an estimate based on US-style testing, not European figures, because the new one isn’t available in the UK.
You're more likely to see something in the 300s for existing used Model S cars – still impressive.
The biggest pull of a Tesla remains the peerless Supercharger network.
Some of the newest chargers from other companies might be faster, but it’s hard to beat the availability of Tesla’s Superchargers – in the UK and across Europe.
7. Polestar 3 – 403 miles

Sitting above the ‘2’ in the Polestar range is the ‘3’ – an all-electric SUV that takes on the Tesla Model Y and Jaguar I-Pace.
With plenty of space and an attractive price point, it’s hard to ignore Polestar’s latest family car offering.
Opt for the single-motor Long-Range variant and you’ll get up to 403 miles of claimed range.
When it comes to charging, the Polestar 3 has access to 250kW rapid DC charging which tops up the battery from 10-80% in just 30 minutes.
8. Tesla Model 3 – 390 miles

Tesla simply cannot build the Model 3 quickly enough, and it’s easy to see why people absolutely love the thing.
For a start, even the entry-level model can do almost 320 miles on a charge, according to Tesla, and it’ll set you back £39,990 from new – even cheaper when used.
Buy a new example of the Long Range model and you'll quickly see the list price click over £50k, but that does give you a manufacturer-claimed 390-mile range.
Like with the Model S, you've got access to Tesla's Supercharger, which makes a jaunt from London to Edinburgh a little more manageable.
Other EVs are starting to be able to use Tesla Superchargers, but not as widely or as easily as a Tesla model itself.
The Model 3 is high-tech and minimalist, but still has a sense of humour. You can torment your passengers by putting digital whoopee cushions on their seats. No, really.
9. BMW i7 – 387 miles

If you like your style backed up with luxurious substance, look no further than the BMW i7.
It might weigh as much as an elephant (2,715kg) but it still returns a claimed 387 miles of range, putting it straight into the top 10.
What’s more, you get one of the softest and most compliant air suspension systems in the world (thanks to active damping) to smoothen out any bumps in the road.
It’s also packed full of tech, including an 8K 31-inch ‘cinema screen’ that folds down from the ceiling for rear-seat passengers. Time to hire that chauffeur?
10. Ford Mustang Mach-E – 372 miles

Whatever your views on Ford putting the Mustang badge on its large full-on electric SUV, there’s no doubting that you can go a long way in it.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with various electric motor and battery options, but the one you want if you regularly do longer trips is the 88kWh battery and single motor, which Ford claims will get you a lengthy 379 miles between charging stops.
Sure, that number might shrink if you're using the heating or the air-con, but it's still good enough to land Ford's spacious entry high up our list.
