What is the best Toyota car?

A used Toyota is a great choice if you want a reliable and high-quality car – and there are plenty of options to choose from

article hero

A used Toyota is a safe option when it comes to shopping for a reliable and well-built car, but that doesn't mean they're boring.

There are plenty of impressive Toyota models on the market, including seven-seater SUVs and quirky city cars.

There's a range of engine options to choose from. You can pick from a straight petrol setup, the odd diesel (such as a RAV4), an efficient hybrid, or you can make the jump to a fully electric car.

Toyota Auris

Toyota Auris

A used Toyota Auris is an ideal option if you’re after a hatchback that’s reliable and affordable to run.

It’s ideal for smaller families who want an understated motor, but the sleek styling will appeal to many motorists.

Available with petrol, diesel and hybrid engines, there are plenty of Auris models on offer.

For the best running costs, opt for the 1.8-litre hybrid setup to achieve up to 68.8mpg.

You’ll find the cabin to be spacious and comfortable as well, with around 360 litres of boot space depending on the model.

Tech in the interior is also plentiful – including a Touch 2 infotainment setup that’s easy to use.

Toyota Aygo

When it comes to quirky city cars, the Toyota Aygo is a solid buy.

With its eye-catching design and comfortable drive, it’s a perfect first car or choice for those who spend a lot of time in urban areas.

The Aygo rivals the Volkswagen Up and SEAT Mii, but arguably offers a more interesting design.

The interior is a treat, with an easy-to-use infotainment setup that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Boot space measures 168 litres – so best for carrying small loads – but can be extended if you drop the rear seats.

You can also expect impressive fuel efficiency, offering up to 57.6mpg from the manual gearbox.

Toyota C-HR

A used Toyota C-HR is a practical but enjoyable pick for a small SUV.

It’s easy and comfortable to drive, with two self-charging hybrid models to choose from for impressive fuel economy.

The 1.8-litre model can achieve up to 60.1mpg, while the 2.0-litre is more powerful and scores around 57.7mpg.

Inside, the car boasts a 12.3-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Not only does the C-HR look luxurious and offer plenty of tech, but it feels high-quality as well.

Toyota Corolla

A used Toyota Corolla is one of the best cars you can go for if you want something seriously efficient but aren’t a diesel fan.

In fact, the 1.8-litre hybrid engine can achieve up to 64.1mpg.

It’s a comfortable car to drive and is an ideal family hatchback, with a 313-litre boot and comfortable cabin.

Plus, the five-star Euro NCAP rating gives you peace of mind when travelling with your family.

The interior offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen unit if you opt for a model after the 2022 facelift.

Pre-facelift models come with an eight-inch setup and the older Toyota Touch 2 infotainment software.

The Corolla feels relatively sporty on the roads and can be nippy when you want it to be. You’ll appreciate the electric mode for efficiency, but can still hit 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds.

Toyota GR Supra

If you're in the business of turning heads, a used Toyota GR Supra should be on your list.

It’s great fun to drive and has years of history that prove it’s a car that knows what it’s doing.

Sitting low on the road with a shark-like shape, the GR Supra is an eye-catching car.

When it comes to driving, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine is a lot of fun.

It offers 330hp and can easily hit 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds. There’s also a 2.0-litre engine on offer.

The GR Supra is impressive on the inside as well, packing tech like the BMW iDrive infotainment system thanks to its joint development with the German brand.

Toyota Highlander

A practical Toyota Highlander is ideal if you want a large, well-built SUV with seven seats – especially as it still offers a 332-litre boot at the rear.

There’s a single engine on offer – a 2.5-litre hybrid that can achieve 39.7mpg. That might seem low, but it’s impressive for an SUV of this size and perfect for daily use.

Reliability is a strong point for the Highlander, with that Toyota name serving a predictably solid and dependable build.

You’ll also benefit from the built-in 12.3-inch Smart Connect screen that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Toyota Prius

There are few cars as reliable as a used Toyota Prius – this one is a box-ticker of a family car. It’s uniquely styled and easy to drive, with plenty of space in the cabin.

You can access a massive boot of up to 502 litres, depending on the model you choose. This can be extended to 1,558 litres if you fold down the seats.

Running costs are affordable, especially if you opt for the hybrid model. The plug-in hybrid Prius can achieve up to 134mpg, while the least economical of the bunch still achieves up to 58.9mpg.

Plus, the Prius was awarded a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating on its most recent test back in 2016.

Toyota RAV4 A red Toyota RAV4 hybrid

Another impressive SUV, a used Toyota RAV4 is a good fit for families wanting to improve efficiency or an eco-conscious motorist that needs extra space.

It’s a hybrid SUV that’s also available as a plug-in hybrid (as well as rare petrol and diesel versions).

Toyota claims the plug-in model can travel up to 46 miles using only electric power.

Inside, the RAV4 is impressive, with the top-of-range Excel trim adding electric seats that make getting comfortable easier.

You’ll also get aids like front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera fitted as standard.

There’s a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Toyota Yaris

A familiar sight on UK roads, the perennially popular used Toyota Yaris can do little wrong.

It’s a peppy hybrid car that makes efficient driving easy and is an ideal first step into the world of electric-powered motoring.

The 1.5-litre hybrid engine can offer up to 68.9mpg, while insurance and road tax are also affordable. This makes it an ideal option for a first car or an inexpensive daily runner.

Despite being a relatively inexpensive car to buy and run, the inside of the Yaris feels generously kitted out.

It’ll depend on the trim you choose, but there are seven-inch infotainment touchscreens in the entry-level models, or nine-inch options in the range-topping Excel.

You’ll also have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in, plus options for an impressive six-speaker set-up.
